President | Taffc denied the applications for the pardon of Charle3 W. Morse of New York and John E. Walsh of Chicago, j the two most prominent bankers ever convicted and sect to federal prisons j under the national banking laws. Not j only did the president refuse to pardon either Morse or Walsh, but he also declined at this tiraeto exercise: any other soit of executive clemency j in the cases or to shorten the sentence i imposed upon the two men by the courts in which they were convicted, i In denying the pardons the presi- j dent tcck a firm stand that the na- ; tional banking laws must be upheld j when they affect the rich man, even I more than when they affect the .poor. | The record in the Walsh case, the j president said in his opinion, ""shows j inoral turpitude of the insidious and j dangerous kind, to punish which the national banking laws were especially enacted." In considering the case of Morse, | the president said that from a consideration of the facts in the case, "I have no doubt that Morse should have received a heavier sentence than Walafc. Indeed, the methods taken j by Morse tend to show that more keenly than Walsh did he realize the evil of what he was doing." In his opinion in the Walsh case the president protested against the failure to discriminate between legitimate business and improper g ain. Clemson College Will Receive Over $275,000 This Year. Clemson college will this year receive over $275,000 from the sale of j the fertilizer tax tags. The total amount received by the institution la9t year was $240,098. The total sales to the present date ainount to $235,000. The total sales to the same date last year was $211,975. There is a tax cf 25 cents a ton on fertilizers, and this means that the farmers of the State will use about 1,200,000 tons this year. Five of One Family Drown. The sadden capsizing of a small battean, only fifty* feet from the Mississ:ppi river landing at Arkansas City, Ark., caused the drowning of five persons, all of one family, on Si turday afternoon. Nine members of the Wilson family were on the batteau at the time of the accident. Friends who went to the landing to tell the Wilsons goodbye, endeavored to persuade them not to board the batteau a9 it was already heavily loaded"with merchandise. But Parma Wilson, an old rivermaD, who, with the other members of his family, lived at Entaw, Mis9., urged his relatives to follow him in the batteau and they did so reluctantly. The small craft had gone fifty feet from the shore before it tamed over, throwing the men, women and childi ren into the water, and before assistance could reach them, five were drowned. - Men who mean no harm are not necessarily harmless.
