The recent dry cold weather was
tough on cotton. Much of it has died
since the warm days set in necessitating
a replanting and some'planted over
entirely.
The Gaston Baseball Hustlers played
the Pelion nine last Saturdaj, the
13th, the score being 22 to 2 in favor
of Gaston.
We predict some June brides hereabouts
from present indications. All
coming this way will be married at
half price now, including a certificate,
except cross-eyed, freckled face, blackeyed
bachelors and red-headed old
maids with a wart on the nose, who
will be tied up free gratis. So don't
hesitate; come along and save that
dcikr.
There are more dry wells no * than
we have ever known before. Ms
thinks they'll get filled ere the good
old summer daj*s have ended.
The poor R. F. D. boys are having

Mr. W. A. Goodwin, who went to
Rochester, Minn., to have a cancer
treated, was getting along nicely at
last reports.

HOW TO COMBAT SOME
GARDEN INSECTS.

insect and familiar to every one.
The simplest method for controlling
it cumpletely consists of an application
of Paris green. It should be remembered
that the soluble arsenic
contained in Paris green is dangerous
to foliage and this poison should not
be used undiluted. When properly
made it can be used with absolute
safety to the foliage of potato and is
the best poison for rapid destruction
of the beetles. It can be used either
wet or dry. When used a3 a spray, it
is made as follows:
Paris gr en 1 lb
Quicklime 3 lbs.
Water .. 123 gals.
The lime must not be omitted as this
will prevent the burning of the foliage.
How to prepare: Mix the Paris
green with a small quantity of water
to form a paste and pour it into a barrel
of water. Slake the lime to the
consistency of white wash and aiso
add it to the barrel of water. Stir
with a paddle and the spray is ready.
In the small family garden mix a
tablespoon full of Paris green with a
little water to form a paste, then add
it to a 2y2 to 3 gallon pail full of water.
Then slake a lump of stone lime
about the size of a man's fist and also

the spraj' is complete. Apply with a I
spray pump or with a whisk broom.
Paris green may be used dry. A
teaspoon fuil of Paris green is thoroughly
mixed with one quart of dilutent
as airslaked lime, land plaster, or
Sour and then dusted on the plants in
the morning when the dew is on; it is
dusted by means of a muslin bag or a |
can with holes made through the bottom.
The melon cr pickle worm. Both
are present every season and attract
attention by boring into the fruit of
melons and cantaloupes. The pickle
worm prefers the buds, bloom, and
fruit of summer squash; the melon
worm prefers the foliage. In the melon
or cantaloupe patch there should
be planted a few hills of summer
squash. These squash plants should
be thoroughly sprayed with arsenate
cf lead, two pounds to fifty gallons of
' water. When the melons or cantaloupes
approach the size of a base ball
they should be tightly bagged with
six pound bags of a fairly heavy grade
of paper. This will prevent worms
that were not killed on the summer
squash to enter the melons aud eanta- I
loupes. v (
Arsenate of lead is rapidly taking
the place of Paris green for use i n
tender foliage. It contains less than
% per cent soluble arsenic and for
this reason can be used without danger
of burning the foliage.

to be practically certain, and resulted
in a caucus of the Democratic delegation
from New York, at which eighteen
members declared themselves in
favor of free raw wool, and four argued
against it. All pledged themselves
to abide by the decision of the
full Democratic caucuses.
