house. He is considered the most
powerful member of the committee,
yet Repiesentalive Lamb, of Virginia,
is the ranking Democratic member
and Mr. Lever will retire i.i his favor.
Mr. Lever is known as one of the
hardest working congressman in Washington
and he has secured many
things for South Carolina.. He is an
authority on agriculture
Big Lot of Steers.
Messrs C. W. and D. J. Caughman
shipped 72 9teers to Baltimore Saturday.
The total weight of the lot was
something over 75,0C0 pounds, and
they were sold at 51-2 cents per pound.
The cattfe was bought four months
ago, and had gained 120 pounds each.
On account of the high price of feedstuffs,
it is claimed that the gentlemen
lost on the deal, although the fertilizer
derived is a ccnsiderab e consideration.

Fire Interrupts Services.
Batesburg, March 5. To-day, just a9
services began.in the churches, the
fire whistle blew and the churches
wfcre 90011 vacated. It was found that
the house of Mts. Josie Pond was on
fire. The firemen did valliant service,
but the house was too far gone, and
their work, so far as the house was
concerned, was of no avail. The building
was a large structure, and was run
as a private boarding house. Near the
building is a large blacksmith shop,
and-the fire fighters directed .their teiiorts-towards
saving it, which they did.
'Near the shop is.situated the Stanlard
Oil tank, and if the 'shop had
mrned, it is highly probable that tiis
ank.wouid haye exploded. The wind
va.s not blowing.much, or there would
lave been more damage.. Much* sym

Will Issue Bonds.
An election was held in Leesville
Thursday to determine whether bonds
to the amount of $6,000 should be issued
to further improve and equip the

for bonds. With the farther implement
this will give Leesville will enjoy
edacational facilities offered by
few towns in the State. The trustees
have just completed a modern brick
building on the campus to be used as
recitation rooms. Eyes are more and
m^re turned to Leesville as an educational
centre.

The Joint Council of the Lexington
Pastorate will meet at the parsonage,

o'clock a. m., for the purpose of calling
