More than a thousand men and women,
mostly white, were tried at Eastover,
Richland county, on Wednesday
on the charge of violating the liquor
laws. Four pleaded guilty and six were
convicted, and four were sent up to
the circuit court. The fines imposed

A horribie tragedy took place near
Woodruff, Spartanburg county, on
Wednesday. Wm. M. Langford and
his son, W. D. Langford, had some
falling out and the son said he was
going to an adjoining farm. The father
warned him not to go into tfie house
after his things, and when he went he
killed him with a shotgun.

Parents Who Gamble.
A distressed mother not long ago
asked the writer to try and stop her
boys from ".-hooting craps" on the
street. It developed that the mother
herself was a chronic gamble?, playing
poker for money almost every
night in her own home or the home of
one of her neighbors. Y/Len reminded

"That may be, but I don't want my
boys to become gamblers."
Certainly she didn't. And for that

The prominent business man whose
once happy home was recently wrecked
by poker playing is but one of the
many thousands who are lamenting
the day on which they acquired a
knowledge of the game.
It would be an underestimate of the
case to say the gambling eyil is a
growing one. Ibis full grown; and
it9 ravages are to be seen on every
side. One cannot make an evening
call, or go out for a stroll upon the
street, without becoming the involuntary
witness of its lighting, blasting
presence.
In the rear of every saloon, and in
the back rooms of many places that
are not saloons, in thousands, yes,
tens of thousands, of homes, in ciubroom9
and pool rooms, and along the
very side walks, even on Sunday
mornings as the people are on their
way to church, the vice is busy, alluring
men and women, boys and girls
to inevitable ruin.
We have been hearing for a long
time that the home is the "heart of
the world,'' and undoubtedly it is. As
the heart is the heart central organ of
the body, so the home is the great
central thing in our hnman society.
Sound homes make a sound society, a
strong, healthy, happy state, while on
the other hand, unsound homes,?
homes that are honeycombed by vevil,
weaken and destroy a State.
This being the case, what i9 the outlook
for us, with our homes and a
children dedicated to the gamblers'
trade? What fathers and mothers
cooly and deliberately turn their
homes into gambling dens, what are
they to expect from their children?
If they grow up to be gamblers, what
cm the parents say? Should the parents
rebuke them, could they not turn
on them with the unanswerable reply,
"You set us the example.''
Sometimes, somewhere, somehow,
such fathers and mothers will have to
settle for their cold-blooded indifference

If we could look on things with a
boy's vision perhaps we would change
some of our manhood opinions.
