Governor Blease is exercising hi9 ! pardoning power alright. * 16 is thought that Governor Blease will veto certain items in the general !p|! appropriation bill. 4 Are the courts of this county to be nm by the lawyers or the presiding judge? I The ground hog saw his shadow and K;, went back m his hole, but the warm l|r weather is still with us. I . We long for the dogwood blossoms E90 that we can hie away to the 9hady Iig MnK8 oi tne inaisco. It cost ten dollars to smile at a col! / lege girl in Greenville and all of the young men thereabouts are said to have the dry grins. Recorder Veraer h<;ard 49 cases in pcH6e court Monday morning. A good L record for local option. The high eost of living does not seem to eff -i the members of the legislature?are working for the aj? . honor e. i .e thing and the |200 to | If ir is unconstitutional for a United H|*';'. i Static Senator, a member of the legisH' latere or other pnblic official to be ,a school or college trustee, let's do away with the whole blame thing. w^m , B Another white man i9 reported to ^B have been shot in a negro house in Columbia on last Saturday night. Is IB it not getting time for the authorities h hi onr capital city to "sit np and take notice?" The legislature did exactly right in H "calling off" the great merger suit. H Absolutely nothing would be gained by pursuing the matter further, only H a fat job for some "well learned" II Since the policemen of Greenville are required to accompany the college girls to church, it is said that the mayor of chat city is being besieged with applications from men in all parts of the country who want to become policemen. The legislature should pass the railroad milage bill. What difference & line* it make whether the milave is I polled by the agent- or the conductor? The railroads sell the books for cash. It often works a hardship not only on traveling public, but on the railscad agents as well. The deadlock in the legislatare over - the election of the fifth justiceship was to have been expected, and shows [ the folly of allowing circuit judges < and members of the legislat ure to at \ fare to these positions. Ko member j> ef the legislature especially shonld be [ permitted to offer himself for any pot ?taon where his colleagues have a I light to vote. f I A new charter for the Oolurabiaf Aiken-Aogii9ta trolley line has been t naked for, which is taken to mean that I the project is being revived. This anfe wttmcement will be received with in Iterest by the peopb living along the j 3me of the proposed new ek ctric rail- i -wayr for nothing could add so much I o the already well developed ar.d -iwperoas territory through which i he line woald pass. An ac& has s passed by the legislature authorg the comity of Lexington to pay -third the cost of the bridges pro i led Rici 1 ?nd pays the rem inder. So, then, it is now "up to" Columbia, and it remain? to be seen just how anxious those people are to have free bridges. / .Once again the abominable court "roster" has cost the taxpayers of T ' n />nnoi/?C.KoVllo C1T1 i^CXlD J^LVIl CU Uli tj tX W7UJLU. of money. Thirty-six jurors wero on hand Monday morning?all of them ready to perform their duty, but the "roster" was found wanting. We have no intention of causing offense to the lawyers, for they are all our i friends, but they have had experience I enough in the past to realize ere this that the "roster" is nothing more nor less than a teeming farce. When a case is entered on the court docket it should be disposed of as soon as possible, and the party bringing the action should be compelled to be in readiness at all times to present his cause. The jurors and other officials of the couit will be here ready for business next Monday, but it's dollars to doughnuts that the remit will be the same. Land Bought For Negro CoUege. A few months ago we recommended | Irmo to the board of mission for Freedmen as a snitable place for Harbison college. On Friday, the 10th instant, the deal was closed in the purchase of nearly 500 acres of land to establish a large agricultural and industrial school for colored youths. Thousands of dollars have been spent in the purchase of the land and thousands will be put in the erection of buildings. This school 1 being established there will mean ! much to Irmo from a financial point of view; also to Columbia, as it is only 10 or 12 miles from here. The white people at Irmo are very kindly disposed to the colored people and will welcome such a school in their midst. M. G. Johnson. To Celebrate Comnlpflnn nf Rridnp.
