exchange, desirous of getting married,
I would not trouble about nay looks
further than to beep neatly and becomingly
dressed. But I sfcodld set
resolutely to work to take an interest
in men generally; study them as one
studies geology, botany, entomology,
or any other ology that appeals to the
taste, and I shouid seek to become
forgetful of self. So many girls spoil
their Chances by behaving as if it were
a mnii^s duty to study them. Of
course, tney may oe i>ne interesting
creatures they think themselves to be,
but their attitude repels investigation
of their merits.
A girl lis never so charming as when
she has forgotten self and appears sincerely
interested in some one else;
sympathy is a valuable asset, and men
like to be thought interesting. Their
lives and individual natures, not their
hearts, Should be the direct objects of:
intereet, and nothing ought to be eas-;
ier than to.check any signs of giddd-:
ness on the part of the young man, at
the outset.; one should simplj' lessen
the force ofiher sympathetic interest,
in him. While studying the speci- i
men, the girl should expect nothing 1
from the man?not even candy. We
know that men have a hard time, i
these days; but women do not find
the battle of 'Hfe a play-ground.
Instead, however, of mentioning i
one's own struggles, the girl should
encourage the specimens to show their
ability to fight it out against all odds.
If a girl wants to especially please her
specimen, she should ask for his advice.
Men have advice to give away,
and they are always more than willing
to bestow it liberally on their women
friends. It pleases them for a woman
to depend on them, even to show
them her new gowns and hats and ask
if they like tnem. A man likes hi9
sweetheart to recognize the correctness
of his taste and judgment. So,
if you wi9h to put your specimen in a
good humor, a9k his advice. It remains
with you to do as you please
with it, after it is given.

Confessed to Giving
Child Deadly Poison.
Rochester, N. Y., Jan. 13.?Arrested
as she claimed her trunk at the
New York Central station today, Mrs.
Edith Melber, a widow, who says sh^
is 23 years old, of Schenectady, confessed,
according to the Rochester police,
that in a swamp near Albauy last
Friday afternoon she gave her 5-yearold
son, George, carbolic acid, from
the effect of which he died. She was
then locked up on a charge of murder
in the first degree and will be taken
to Albany,
In explanation of her crime, the police
say, Mrs. Melber asserts fhat she
has been a widow four years, during
which time she has had a struggle to
care for herself and her child, and
that this battle for an existence drove
her to take her baby's life. She is an
attractive young woman. At the end
of her examination 9he was unnerved
and weeping hysterically.
When she made her confession, according
to the police, Mrs. Melber said
that she gave the child the acid when
he asked for a drink.
Kill More Than Wild Beasts.
The number of people killed yearly
by wild beasfcs don't approach theva^t
number killed by disease germs. No
life is safe from their attacks. They're
in air, water, dust, even food. But
prand protection is afforded by Electric
Bitters, wliich nestrov and exnel

system. That's why chills, fever and
ague, all malarial and many blood diseases
yield promptly to this wonderful
blood purifier. Try them, and enJcy
the glorious health and new strength
iney'll give you. Money back, if not
satisfied. Only 50c at all Druggists.
Store Wrecked; .
25 or 30 Killed.
At Connellsville, Pa., on Thursday
a terrific ga9 explosion, and fire which
followed, destroyed McOrary's five
and ten cent store and it is believed
that 2o or 30 persons, mostly young
girls, clerking in the store were killed.
Several shoppers are also reported
missing.
The families of the missing persons
fought with the police to get near the
fire.
Escaped With His Life.
"Twenty-one years ago I faced an
awful death," writes, H. B. Martin,
Port Harrelson, S. C. "Doctors said I
had consumption and the dreadfnl
cough I had looked like it, sure enough.
I tried everything, I could hear of, for
my cough, and was undei the treatment
of the best doctor in Georgetown,
S. C. for a year, but could get no relief.
A friend advised me to try Dr.
King's New Discovery. I did to, and
was completely cured. I feel that I

Turpentine Never Higher.
Turpentine is selling at a world record
price, quotations on the Savannah
board of trade for several days having
set new high figures for that great
commodity. Day after day the record
has been broken for several days,
and a new climax was reached on
Thursday when the quotation of 82
AAtifa TTTO o morln
ucuuo nao uimuv*
Rosin has been high for a longer
time, but its figures, too, averaging
for several days, are the highest in
the market's history. Turpentine's
jump to record prices has been the
market's feature during the whole of
the present month. The season has
two months and a half yet to run.
The reason for the high prices is the
slackness of the supply, the demand
taking whatever is offered at the prices
quoted. Savannah naval stores
men have been expecting the jump.
Naval stores farmers are making a
greater profit than ever before.
