HYATT, Proprietor. j*j t Burning of Hay Caused Big Light The brilliant light seen Sunday night in the Southern skies was caused by the burning of 60 or 70 tons ot hay on the plantation of Oapt. D. J. Griffith, across the river from Columbia in Lexington county a few miles. The hay was under a shed ou the edge of the flold, not having been baled, and it is presumed that some fishing party or other persons accidentally set fire to the hay while making a fire. Whereas, on the 5th day of October, 1910, it pleased God, our Heavenly Father, to take from us our brother John W. Bouknight, ar.d whereas, he was a true aud faithful member of Chapin Local No. 107; therefore be it resolved 1st. That in his death we have lost a worthy friend and loyal brother, a true and faithful member and this order sustained a heavy loss. 2nd. That in life he was courteous, gentlemanly and in every respect a true man and we deeply deplore nis demise. 3rd. That we hereby express our heartiest sympathy for his family and loved ones in their bereavement and extend to them our keenest consolation. 4th. That it is the sense of this union that these resolutions be spread upon its minutes; that a copy be sent to the bereaved family; also to the Lexington Dispatch and Farmers Union Sun for publication. Prizes to The Schools. The executive committee of the South Carolina School Improvement association will meet in Columbia December 16 and 17 for the purpose of awarding $3,000 in prizes to the rural schools of the state that have made the most decided material improvement during a given leDgth of time. Fifty prizes will be given. Ten of the prizes are to be $100 each and 40 are to be $50 each. Seyeral of these will come to Lexington county, it is thought. Two Negroes Lynched. " Calvin Ezell and Sylvester Peyton, negroes, were found Hanging to a tree at Double Branches, two miles from Monroeville, Ala. They had been arrested on a charge of burning the barn and outhouses on the place of Edgar Bass and confessed to the ciime. A deputy sheriff had them jn charge and was on his way to Monroeyille where the prisoners were to be held for safe keeping. Miss Edith Saunders, who was to have been the bride, collapsed when the news was broken to her in the home of her aunt in Manhatten, where the guests waited until almost midnight for the missing bridegroom.
