Forged a Money Order. \
Arthur Banks, a negro boy, better
mown in colored society circles as
'Swansea," says he is going to take J
l post-graduate course in Sing Sing. *
)n Saturday afternoon "Swansea" *
orged the name of Ed. White, one of
he circus negroes who was sent to t
he chaingang last week, to a ?20 J
npney order and secured the money ^
,t the Lexington postoffice.
Postmaster Leaphart was not in at ?
he time and Assistant Postmaster j
)orley suspected nothing wrong. How ^
'Swansea came into possession of the n
aoney order is not known, but it is 13
upjosed that he got the letter from
he postoffice and failed to deliver it
o White. The money order was sent J5
iy the negro's relatives in Durham,
L 0., and was dated November 14.
Vith consumate cunning "Swansea"
leld onto the money order until after ^
Vhite had been convicted and sent g
o the gang before he made an effort n
o get the money. g(
As soon as the forgerv was detected
he matter wa9 reported to the aii- ^
horities and 'Swansea" lit a rag for ^
arts unknown. All night the officers q
unted for the fugitiye without sueess.
On Sunday, however, Deputy c
heriff Miller captured the little ne- n
ro aboard a train in Columbia bound
5r Statesville, N. 0. Ho had spent b
11 of the money except ?3.00.
"Swansea" has been in the toils beDre.
Several years ago he entered t,
le postoffice at Swansea and helped a
imself to a lot of stamps. For this ^
rime he served a term in Siug Sing. j(
ompleting his sentence he returned p
) Swansea, where he again got into ^
ouble, this time stealing goods from
store. He was tried for thi9 offense
ud sentenced to the chaingang.

Lexington Corn Show.
The second corn show of this county
under the auspices of the Lexingtoi
Corn Growers' association was a big
success. While this movem ent is stil
in its incipiency, the character of ex
hibits and the enthusiasm of those
present portend a larger success foi
Che future. This association comes
as the result of a lively interest in the
raising of better corn which culminated
last year in the first corn show this
county has ever had and which was
due to the untiring efforts of Congressman
Lever. Since the association has

petition has seized upon the farmers of
the county, with a large increase in
the yield per acre, and nas back of it
the almost unanimous co-operation of
the farmers of the county. .The department
of agriculture has shown
much interest in the work and from
time to time various of its field meu
have been on the Lexington farms and
it has always stood ready to lend any
assistance of which it is capable. Mr.
Leyer is justly very proud of his venture
along this line and the hearty cooperation
with which the movement
has met, attests the interest o? he
agriculturists of the county.
The show recently held was in many
respe cts superior to that of lastyear?
not that the enthusiasm last year was
insufficient, buf the care shown in the
selection or the corn shown, as well as
the marked improvement in the type,
3how that the lessons of last years
3how have borne fruit. Messrs. Ira
W. Williams and A. G. Smith of the
department attended both shows in
the capacity of lecturers on corn and
both expressed themselyes as being
gratified with the exhibits.
Several prizes were offered for the

The first prize for the best 10 ears

The first prize for the best 10 ear
