Good Roads Campaign*
The goods roads campaign party of
P TiTnwn in T nvi n rr_
I/LIC VUiUUlUia xwgwiu wcic iu JJCAHJg"
ton last Saturday, but there were not
a very large crowd in attendance.
The meeting was presided over by
County Supervisor Langford, who introduced
Mr. C. Wardlaw Moorman,
former secretary of the Columbia
Chamber of Commerce, who, after
stating the purpose of the campaign,
introduced Mr. D. H. Winslow, of the
good roads department of the United
States department of agriculture.
Mr. Winslow is "onto his job" allright
and for over an hour he held the undivided
attention of bis hearers. He
discussed the practical side of good
roads and the good results that follow.
At the conclusion of Mr. Winslow's
address, a county good roads organization
was formed with W. W. Barre,
president; S. L. Dreher vice-president;
and Karl F. Oswald, secretary.
The purpose of the organization is to
arouse a sentiment for good roads
among the people everywhere. It is
likely that a meeting will be called at
an early date, at which time a permanent
organization will be formed.
The meeting was a success from
every point of view, Mr. Moorman expressing
himself as being "well satisfied
with the result attained" inspite
of the 8mallness of the crowd.
The Lyric Theatre.
After your business cares are over
and you wish to enjoy a hearty laugh
and see something interesting and
amusing yoa should not fail to put in
an hour or two at the Lyric Theatre,
any time you are in Columbia. Mr.
Deavenport takes great pride in securing
performances that please Columbia
audiences, and his efforts are
certainly appreciated as evidenced by 1
the large crowds ihat attend each
show. Go and you will be pleased.
Next Tuesday is Barre's picnic, the
greatest social eyent of the season in
Lexington.

Strong Sermon 1
by Dr. Daniel.
In one of the strongest seimons ever
delivered before a Lexington audience,
Dr. J. "Walter Daniel, of Columbia,
presiding elder of the Columbia district
on Sunday afternoon in the
Methodist church here, declared that
"Columbia is the wickedest city south
of Philadelphia." Dr. Daniel, always
brilliant and eloquent, was peculiarly
his own, and handled his subject?
"the Home and its Influence"?with
more than ordinary force and ability.
His word paintings were both lurid
and vivid and reached the hearts of
hi9 hearers.
