The farmer leads a merry life,
He has not much to do.
But just to raise a few pork chops,
To sell to me and you.
And if ho wan ts a motor car,
To save his lazy legs,
Then all that's requisite i9 just
To raise the price of eggs.
The farmer is a happy man,
He drink9 the richest milk,
His daughters dress in satins.
And his wife can dress in silk.
For him the Brahmas cackle,
And for him the Jerseys moo;
I think I'll quit this city life,
And be a farmer, too.

Prisoner Finds a Fortune.
William Hamilton, who disappeared
from his home in Pittsburg eight
months ago and who later fell heir
to a fortune, was discovered Thursday
at the house of correction at Chicago.
The setlement of the estate to which
Hamilton is one of the heirs, has been
delayed while the search for the missing
man was being prosecuted. The
first trace was found in the records of
the municipal court which showed
I that he was sentenced on May 28 to
serve 60 days for disorderly conduct.
Mayor Buse will be asked to pardon
the prisoner, whose health has been
restored and who was so much elated
at the news of his good fortune.

The Candidate.
He, is in our midst and he is be
ginning to be quite numerous. He
has the same old smile?the one that
won't come off?and the same old
hearty hand shake. He is the same
to-day, yesterday and foreyer.
What is a "candidate?" What does
the word mean? Perhaps most of us
never thought just what is its full significance.
Like many others, the term
comes to us from the customs of the
old Romans. In the palmy days of
the republic of which Rome was the
capital, it was the custom for men
who put themselves up for political
preferment to array themselves in the
long white toga of that time. The
candidate was the "white" man,'for
"candidus" meant white. The candidate
was also the sincere man, for
the term "candid" is from the same
source. The whiteness was primarily
that of the toga, of course, but it went
further than that. The white toga
was intended to typify the clean, pure
man.
And even to this day, the seeker
after office arrays himself in his whitest
robes, figuratively speaking, and
lights it up further by his cheeriest
smile and his heartiest laugh. He
puts on his most attractive outside,
so to say, just as the Roman candidate
did.
And it is all right. The rest of us
would do well to imitate the candidate
to some extent, in trying to be pleasant
and agreeable to those whm we
meet in our daily occupations and j
whose aid we need quite as much as
the candidate needs his neighbor's
vote.
