New Orleans As Seen By Old
Lexington Boy.
To the Editor of The Dispatch.
When I stepped from the Nashville
ar.d Louisville fast train last Sunday
night at 8:30 o'clock and walked a
few squares from the depot, 1 wondered
if this was really a Southern
city. Instead of finding the oki-stxlj
southern ways and customs for which
*~ ... . ... .i i
! our clear oiu souuiianu is no-.eu, 1
J found Sunday theatres running at full
i blast; men creeping out from sale on
side doors, and on every hand it
j seemed the topic of conversation
among the better dressed class was
chiefly of the base-ball score for the
afternoon.
The tired-looking policemen lagging
around upon every corner of Canal
Street, the main thoroughfare of
the city, seemed as though he was only
one of the surging multitude, beI
reft entirely of his authority aside
j from his helmet, club and blue uni|
form.
A number of giant-sized mosquitoes
were among the first parties to give
me attention, and they seemed to be
well versed in dodging undercut
blows, as much so as either Jeffries or
? Johnson, tiie famous boxers, the rcj
port of whose fight iu San Francisco
j is advertised very extensive!}' to be
j given by private wire in this spirited
city.
New Orleans claims a total population
of nearly 385,000, and has nearly
400 miles of paved side-walks. About
2.CC0 street cars hurry through the
city, both day and night, carrying
the people from one point to another.
Several parks are spread out for the
interest of visitors, among the prominent
ones being the Audubon, Jackson
Square and Lafayette, the two
last named being adorned by statues
of Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay,
respectively. Just across the Mississippi
river is the site upon which Andrew
Jackson fought the famous battle
of New Orleans, and transfer boats
ply regularly between here and there,
carrying on each trip many tourists
and travellers.
I visited Jackson Square this morning
and beheld with admiration the
equestrian statue to his memory, on
which "Old Hickory" sits with hat in
hand upon a rearing charger, while
beneath the bronze statue are' engraved
the immortal words upon the
granite base: "The Union must and
will be preserved."
Just outside the iron enclosure of
this park and across the street are the
world-famed buildings of interest?

French Cathedral. Around this plot
was once the scene of many a duel
years ago, while in the Cabildo was
the treaty of peace signed between
the United States and France.
The morals of New Orleans are disgustingly
low in son* of the districts.
I will sail from here in a few days.
In conclusion, I find no place like
old Lexington and hope some day to
make it my permanent home.

Be Careful What Ton Say.
In speaking of a person's faults,
Pray, don't forget your own;
Remember, those with homes of glass
Should never throw a stone.
If we had nothing else to do
Than talk of those who sin,
'Tis better we commence at home,
And from that point begin.
We have no right to judge a man
Until he's fairly tried;
Should we not like his company,
j We know the world is wide.
Some may have faults, and who has
not?
The old as well as young;
Perhaps we may, for naught we know,
Have fifty to their one.
j
j Then, let us ali, when we begin
To slander friend or foe,
Think of the harm one word would do
To those we little know.
Remember, curses sometimes, like
Our chickens, roost at homr,
Don't speak of others faults until
You have n me of your own.
