his bondsman. Johnson has twenty
indictments against him for selling
whiskey, and has already been convicted
in the recorder's court there
of handling stuff. The city council of
Sumter, the grand jury, the police

The scholarship- and entrance examination
for Winthrop College will be
held at Lexington on July 1, beginning
at 9 a. m. All applicants should
be on time.
It will bo well to state also that the
applicant must be at least fifteen
years of age, of sound physical health
and must have a good education in
the common school branches.

county that the scholarship for the
College of Charleston is no vacant and
should he taken up. This scholarship
