Lsvsr and LsCraro to Sleep Their
Seats in Congress.
A decision to allow Representatives
Lever and Legare of South Carolina
to retain their seats in the house wa3
announced by election committee No.
3 on Wednesday. Counsel for both
members virtually sou?ht indorse*
meDt of the constitutionality of the
South Carolina election laws bearing
on the elimination of negro suffrage.
The committee would not take that
view, but agreed to seat the two members
because their contestants, R. H.
Richardson and George Priol?au, respectively,
both negroes, did not receive
sufficient number of votes.
What Prohibition Did.
The disastrous (?) effects of prohibition
on a town are strikingly illustrated
by the workings of the prohibition
law in Wilmington, the leading North
Carolina seaport, last year. The law
went into effect there January 1, 1909,
and perhaps in no other seaport city
has it been so well enforced. The results
are that the number of arrests
in 1909 was only 1,218 as compared
with 1,968 with saloons the year before;
inspite of increased population,
there was a decrease in the number of
deaths and cases of insanity; bank dennnifo

from $7,200,000 to $9,960,000 for the
single twelve months, the increase in
bank clearings being greater than for
any other leading southern city except
Atlanta (which is also prohibition);
the number of building permits and
thetfr value more than doubled; and
in spite of losing a $600 license tax on
sixty-three saloons each (and voting
an extra tax for schools), the total
tax rate was reduced 8 cents ^on the

Orders Received Yesierday by Craddock
Terry Co. Unequaled.
Orders received by Craddock-Terry
Company yesterday not only break all
records which they had formerly made
but yesterday's sales break all records
for the South in this line. These enterprising
Lynchburg manufacturers
received orders which amount to more
t han $150,000, or enough shoes to make
a train of thirtv cars, every car filled
to the limit. This means a total of
83,000 pairs of shoes sold in one day,
which would figure out more than
10,000 nairs an hour, and something
over 150 pairs a minute. If this average
could be kept up for the year it
would mean a business of 45 million
dollars, and the 9ale of 25 million pairs
of shoes, or more shoes than a pair for
every man, woman and child in the
Southern States.
This wonderful showing establishes
beyond a doubt Lynchburg's supremacy
as a shoe market; in fact, it marks
a new era in progress of the shoe industry
in the South. Thi9 one day's
business shows the possibilities of this
industry, and Craddock-Terry Company
will have to pay out nearly $40,000
in wages and in salaries for the
making, billing, shipping, etc., of the
shoes sold in this one day, it will be
realized what this means to Lynchburg.
In addition to the amount which
they wiil have to pay out for wages
in Lynchburg, 6,000 shipping cases
made in Lynchburg of Southern lumber
will be utilized in packing these
shoes, 85,000 paper boxes made in
Lynchburg will be needed, and as a
good deal of the leather used in the
construction of these shoes is tanned

The readers of this paper will bo pleased
10 learn that there is at least one
dreaded disease that science has been
able to cure in all its stages, and that
is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the
only positive cure now known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a constitutional
treatment. Hall's Catarrh
Cure is taken internally, acting directly
upon the blood and mucous surfaces of
the system, thereby destroying the foundation
of the disease, and giving the
patient strength by building up the
constitution and assisting nature in doing
its work. The proprietors have so
much faith in its curative powers that
they offer One Hundred Dollars for any
case that it fails to cure. Send for list
of testimonials.
