To Opea The Capital Highway.
The Columbia Automobile Club is
arranging for a sociability run April
j 8 ana i?, irom Augusta to iriiienursj,
to open this section, 250 miles of the
Capital Highway.
Columbia expects to enter 20 autos
and every town along the way will
add some, so that by the time the
Pinehursfc is reached,* there ought to
be nearly 100 cars in line.
This will not be a speed contest or
race, but just a pleasure trip to look
over the road.
The great winter resorts are said to
be taking a deep interest in the Highway
and it is understood that they
propose to advertise it extensively for
next season.
The sociability tourists are scheduled
to pass through Lexington, about
noon. Mor.dav. Anril 18, on their way
to Columbia and Pinehurst. '

The people of Lexington are now
receiving most excellent telephone
service. Through the untiring efforts
of Mr. Samuel B. George, general
manager of the Citizens Telephone
Co., the service has been extended to
Pelion, the connection having been
made with the Pond Branch line.
Within a few days the line will be extended
to Swansea giving these people
free connection to Gilbert.
This is the greatest thing for the
people of the towns as well as the rural
districts, ever devised, and Manager
George is to he congratulated
forgiving the people this improved

iDeath of Mrs. SE&ttis Egbert.
Leesville, March 21.?Mrs. Hatfcie
Herbert died at her home here this
morning at the age of 79 yr ar?. Mrs.
Herbert was a Miss Brice of Columbia.
Her husband, Rev. T. G. Herbert,
who died 12 years ago, was for 40
years a member of the Methodist conference.
Her three sens now living
are all Methodist ministers. They
are: Rev. W. I. Herbert of Charles
ton; Rev. T. G Herbert of Bamberg
and Rsv. C. C. Herbert of Clio. She
also leaves two daughters, Mrs. L. B.
Havnes and Miss Marv Brice Herbert
of Leesville. Mrs. Herbert was a
gooi woman and her m ath is felt as a
uistinct loss to this community.
Senator Tillman in Atlanta.
Senator B. R. Tillman, accompanied
