SUDDEN DEATH OF
DR. J. E. SAUFMANN
Cut Down in the Prime of His Usefulness,
Being Oily 33 Years
of Age.
This town was shocked and inexpressibly
saddened oil Saturday evening
by the sudden and rather unexpected
death of Dr. Julian E. Kaufmanu,
head of the Kaufmann Drug
Co., president of the Citizens' Telephone
Co., and vice-president of the
Home National Bank. A week ago
_; today he was seen on our streets and,
1 although unwell for several weeks, no
one dreamed that the end was so near.
Truly, in the midst of life we are in
death.
i Just 38 years old, in the prime of his
usefulness, he was cut down. A life
full of promise is ended; a loving husband,
a kind and indulgent father, a
true and noble friend i9 no more.
Why it was to be so is beyond our
comprehension, but it is 9aid that
"death love9 a shining mark," and on m
Saturday evening at 7.30 o'clock, he
passe.d'into that bourne from whence
no traveler eyer returns. The end "
was as peaceful as the close of a beau- ^
tiful summer day, when daylight
fades into night with increasing loveliness.
Heart disease was the imme
I diate cause of his death. J
He was a member of one of Lexington's
oldest and mo9t honored families,
being a son of the late Tyler W. fc
Caughman, and his whole life has r
been spent among us. About fourteen
years ago he was married to Miss
Addie Kaminer, daughter of Mr. and a
Mrs. George A. Kaminer, who with
-two sons, Eugene and Christopher,
survives him.
Dr. Kaufmann helped to organize
the Home Bank and was for a number
of years its president. When the ^
Home Bank was converted into a Na- ^
tional bank a little more than a year 8
ago he resigned the presidency of the (j
institution, and was made vice-presi- fi
dent of the H:me National, a position fl
he held up to the time of his death.
He also helped to organize the Citi- fl
zens' Telephone Co., and was it; pros- M
ident. fl
He was a prominent Mason, Knights
of Pythias and Odd Fellow, being a
member of the local orders. He was ,
also a member of the Royal Fraternal J
Union, being the only member of this |
order in Lexington, except Mr. G. M. |
Harman. fl
The remains of Dr. Kaufmann were p
laid to rest in the family plot in St. f
S:ephen's cemetery on Monday at 11 fl
o'clock in the presence of one of the fl
largest congregations ever assembled n
in Lexington. Simple services were |
conducted from the home by the Rev. 9

Lutheran church, after which the ^
body was turned over to the Masons,
who concluded the services, more
than fifty members taking part in the
solemn service. For one Iwur?from
eleven to twelve o'clock?every tele- B
phone of the Citizens' Telephone Co.,
was still out of respect for its deceased
president.
The floral offerings wer many and
handsome, conspicuous among them
being a large wreath of pink carnations
from the Knights of Pythias, one
of white from the Home National
Bank. The grave was litterally cov
ered with floral designs. raj
