The trial and conviction of "Coot"
Lever, the negro would-be rapist, in
the Lexington court last week should
cause a more healthy sentiment in favor
of letting the law take its course
in cases of this kind not only through- ;
out Lexington, but all over the country.
And it will. It show3 conclusively
that the law is sufficient for
any emergency when allowed to pursue
its proper course. Lever will be
legally put to death by the sheriff on
the 25th of February. All this stuff
about juries failing to convict in cases
of this character is all bosh. If a jury
fails to do its duty then it is time for
the people to take the law in their
own hands and see that the culprits
are properly dealt with. There is
nothing to be gained by mob law,
even under the most extreme circumstances.
Lexington county i9 to be
congratulated that none of her citizens
have the blood of "Coot" Lever
on their hands. The husband of the
intended victim is to be congratulated
for the manly stand he took throughout
the trial of the case. He has set
an example for others to follow, and
oae that will win for him the respect
and admiration of law-abiding people
everywhere.
