An Appeal For Setter School
Building at Srookland.
To the Editor of The Dispatch:
Have you any readers in the town
of New Brookland? Of course you
have and I am very anxious that they |
shall read this. There are a great
many children in that town and I am
informed that three hundred or more
of them are in school. I wonder if
the parents of these children have
looked at or thought about the condition
of their school house, the building
where their little ones 9pend five
gi'y hours everv school da>? That
a new building is needed and will
come in the near future is confidently
expected and earnestly hoped. But
what about this one, what is the matter?
If you will go and see how many
window panes are out and how many
other holes there are for the cold wind
to pour in you will agree with me that
a good deal is the matter. There is
one door with a whole panel out. On
a cold day it is imjossible for the
teachers and children to be comfortable
and to do good work, to say nothing
about the danger of sickness resulting
from the exposure. I speak as
a friend to humanity when I say these
things ought not to be. It isn't
right, it isn't kind, it isn't natural to
compel five frail women and three
hundred children to spend five hours a
day in a place like that when a few
dollars will make the house as comfortable
as the average home. You
had not thought about it, had you?
Maybe you were not aware of it. If
you don't believe it now, go and see
and then you will know. And vhen
you do know I think somebody will do
something. I certainly hope so.

Prof. W. E. Black, the popular principal
of the Palmetto Collegiate Institute,
has been confined to his home
for the past two weeks with fever.
He is getting along nicely, however,
and his many friends hope for him a
9peedy recovery. His place in the
school room is being admirably filled
by thit talented young teacher, Mis9
Etael Dreher.

As a surprise Christmas gift, the St.
Paul's charge presented an amount of
money the second Sunday in DecemI
ber to their pastor, the'i Rev. B. D.
I Wessinger, of Gilbert, with which to
; purchase a surry for the use of himi
self and family. He, together with
j Mr. T. S. Sease of Gilbert, made the
j selection and ordered direct from the
| factory.
The surry is a nice one ana a great
comfort to the pastor and his family.
Mrs. W. P. Keisler, Mrs. J. H. Long,
j Miss Blanche Price, Miss Lula Sease,
I and'Mr. Willie Long were the com!
mittee that solicited the amount.
They were quietly at work during the
fall, and had to frequently "dodge
the preacher" to keep him from finding
it out.
Rev. Wessinger had just completed
five years' work among this generous,
kind hearted people, and thi9 mark of
esteem giyes him much encouragement
as he continues to labor in their
midst. Both pastor and people are
happy.
