"Hitherto base currency of Chilean and Peruvian coinage has been current generally and the present attempt is to retire this and substitute : lor it French francs and centimes. Only French money has been taken in tne Papeete market for some time; but the natives, not being accustomed to sell for such money, want as much of it in name as they had been receiving in the debased coin, and charged a rreiiCh franc for what was formerly sold for a Chilean franc. Only by the prompt adjustment of a price scale by the city* council was a serious and Dermanent increase in the cost of livi i ig averted. Laborers also endeavored to take advantage of tne situation by asking twice as much for a day's work, but they were unsuccessful until the steamship Mariposa arrived Sept. 23. The agents of tiie ship were obliged, in consequence of the strike, to pay ?2 a day of nine hours to natives for unloading and loading cargo, twice ' as much as has evev been paid for si.cn work in the colony.
