Miller. On Monday afternoon Coot Lever, negro, attempted to commit crimial assault upon the young wife of a rominent farmer of the Piney v/oods iction of the Dutch Fork. Portuately the woman's cries were heard y her husband, who was plowing in field nearby, aDd the negro fled ithout accomplishing his fiendish urpose. The woman is said to have been se- | erely choked, the finger nails of the j rute penetrating the skin and caus- j jg the blood to flow. The news of the attack spread like | rild fire in a sage field and the entire ettlement was soon in an uproar, he sheriff was notified and Deputy heriff Miller was dispatched to the ?ene a* once in an automobile. Mr. Iiller was not long working on the ase before he had his man cornered i a negro house near Chapin. When pproached Lever bitterly denied his uilt, but upon being told that he rould have to be carried before the roman for identification, he confessed nd told the whole 9tory. It wa9 the intention of the officer at rst to bring his prisoner by rail, but efore the train arrived a posse road p on horseback aud fyfr. Miller spired the prisoner to a place of safety nd secured a horse and buggy and lade for the jail at a lively gait, ariving here just ahead of a crowd on orseback. At 12:30 yesterday a crowd of about 00 of the sturdy citizens of the Piney Voods section drove up to the jail J ate for the purpose of securing the eyro, but unfortunately for them nd fortunately for the negro, Deputy sheriff Miiler had left just 30 minutes efore for Columbia with Lever. The rip was made in 55 minutes. The crowd was sober, but none the iss determined, and took their defeat ood naturedly. Mr. Miller is receiving the congratlat?ons of his friends upon his sucessful efforts in upholding the law. + When a cold becomes settled in the ystem, it will take several days' treatlent to cure it, and the best remedy o use is Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, t will cure quicker than any other, and lso leaves the system in a natural, and ealthy condition.
