To harvest the fleecy something i like 5,000,000 of the black folks are needed. Along has come a man who has been thinking of picking cotton by machinery, and at last an automobile for the cotton fields has come into use. It seems strange that no one has ever thought that the contents of the cotton boll could be pulled out by mechanical fingers, instead of hutran fingers. That is what the picker does. instead or two arm9, however, it has no less than eight, and a 10-year-old darky can ?be trained in an hour to guide two of these arms at such a rate that a machine which traveled over a field in Alabama picked and bagged six bales of the staple, weighing 500 pounds each, in a day of ten hours. This beats the liyelie9t work which has ever been accomplished by human labor. With an active cotton picker it costs very nearly $5 a bale, because the amount of cotton to a pound is so enormous.?Van Norden Magazine. Little Child Silled. Wallialla?David Haulbrooka, a boy . six years of age, was killed at his father's home one mile west ol Walhalla. Both parents were absent, having left home only a short time before. y Charley Haulbrooka, a brother, aged eight, was at home and siys he was in the house when he heard the report of the gun. The contents of the gun entered the boy's breast and died almost instantly. ^ They Didn't Have to Change. During the years ia which our pure food laws hare been put into effect there ha* been a great hurrying and scurrying on the part of the food manufacturer* to change their methods to make them conform to the law. The Quaker Oats Company is a conspicuous exception. It was admitted that Quaker Oats was as pure and clean as possible and that it was an ideal food. It i? so cheap that any one can af- , ford it and so nourishing that everyone need* it. The result of last year's experiment* at Yaie and other points where food values were tested is that Quaker Oats has been adopted many persons as their food on whish they rely for?adding vigor and endur rtoo af m tirMln an/3 Kv?q i n This splemdid food is packed m the regular size package and in hermetically sealed tins.
