SCHOOL PRIZES FOR 1909.
Announcement to Schools of
Lexington County.
The South Carolina School Improvement
association offers 35 prizes
to the schools of the State for the
most decided material improvement
made during a given length of time.
Five of the prizes are to be $100 each,
and thirty are to be $50 each. Regulations
cencerning the thirty-five
prizes that are to be awarded by this
association are as follows:
1. Improvements must oe made Between
November 1, 1908 and December
10, 1909.
2. Prizes will be awarded to schools
where the most decided material improvements
have been made during
the time mentioned.
3. Under material improvements are
included local taxation, consolidation,
new buildings, repairing and painting
old ones, libraries, reading rooms [or
tables, interior decorations, beautifying
yards and better general equipment.
4. No school can compete for any of
these prizes unless it is a rural school.
No town with more than 400 population
shall be eligible to the contest.
5. All who wish to enter this contest
must send names and descriptions of
schools before improvements are made
to the president prior to October 1st.
6. All descriptions, photographs and
other evidences showing improvements
must be sent to the president
before Dec. 15, 1909. The chairman
of the board of trustees of any school
that is competing for a prize must approve
all descriptions before and after
improvements are made.
7. Blanks will be sent to schools
competing for the above prizes with
questions to be answered relating to
the conditions under which the improvements
have been made.
8. Prizes will be awarded in checks
at the annual meeting of the South
Carolina association, Dec. 31, 1909.

a youiig white couple employed in the

before a magistrate last week of
petty larceny, stealing cloth from the
mill. He was sentenced to a fine of
$15 or 30 days on the chaingang, she

The "Glenn Spriugs club" conducted
by "Skeet" Poat, was raided by
Spartanburg county officers last week
and many bottles of beer, a little
whiskey, several packs of cards and
lots of poker chips were found. Manager
Poat was arrested, and so were
two negroes. Poat and one negro
gave bond at once, to appear for trial;
the other negro was committed to
jail.

Rebecca Taylor, colored, was committed
to Richland jail last week on
the charge of poisoning the well of
her neighbor, Daphne Summers, like- "L.

poison in them, supposed to be bichloride
