Chapin 'Phone Co. Meeting.
Chapin, Aug. 2.?The annual meet- n(
ing of the Chapin Telephone company su
was called to order last Friday at 2 is
o'clock by the president, J. S. Wes- or
singer. The following officers were de
elected to serve tor one year: J. S.
Wessinger, reelected president; S. B. cc
D. Lever, vice president; W.P. Betchman,
secretary, and J. S. Boozer,
treasurer.
One year ago the Chapin Telephone
company was organized by a few men ^
and in the latter part of last year a -Q
few miles of line were built, and a few ^
telephones installed, today they have
112 stockholders, 104 telephones and
about 75 miles of line, and in the next
year they hope to cover the most of
, - *the territory in the Dutch Fork of
Lexington county. ^

Negro Burglar ia Jail.
A negro, giving his name as Charlie
rilliams and his home Newberry, is
jail here with several charges of

train by Deputy Sheriff Miller.
Williams has confessed to being a

1 Prohibition For Four Weeks.
This county, like all other countie
in the State, is now having a taste o
prohibition. The dispensaries al
closed on Monday at sun down, ac
1 cording to an act of the legislature

' election is declared.
The dispensaries all did a thriving
business on Monday, many people be
lieving that they were closing dowi
for good,- and they wanted to geti
''little to keep for emergency."
The election takes place on the 17tl
of August and it is expected that:

ly at work for several weeks, and th<

Shot At Sis Wife
Thea Silled Himself.
Winston-Salem, N. C., Aug. 2.?The
body of Harrison Cline, who la9t night
went to the home of his father-in-law,
W. F. Gordon, and attempted to kill
his wife after she refused to return
and live with him, was found this
morning, badly mangled, near the
tracks of the Southern Railway, three
miles east of town. A verdict of suicide
was rendered, the coroner's jury
believing that he deliberately threw
himself before a moving train.
After Cline had shot at his wife
three times last night his father-in.., a
law took the revolver from him and. Ha
drove him from the house. Neither
