The Popular Liquor .Traffic Im- j moral. To the Editor of The Dispatch: j If alcohol, in all of its forms, was used only for mechanical, chemical, medical and necessary purposes, then we might admit that the traffic in it was as lawful as selling bread or clothing. But as a matter of fact we know that the bulk of it works untold injury and misery, and woe, and destruction to the consumers. Now the man of the world, the business man, the money man, tries to make himself believe that, if his customers with his goods?alcohol, firearms, opium, etc.,?bring misery and ruin to themselves and family, and fellowmen, they are not responsible. He must make money, regardless of wrecked lives, ruined homes, and a debased citizenship. He is much like the ambitious, unprincipled general, who, to gain a kingdom, will heartlessly ride right over the helpless, bleeding, dying bodies of his own men as well as those of the enemy. The most natural thing is?for a merchant or his clerk to endeavor to broaden his volume of business and to seek customers. There may be exceptions among liquor dealers and their agents, but the writer is not personally acquainted with any of them. He does know that there are liquor dealers' associations, the object of which is to protect and increase their business. What bearing have the bible and Christianity upon the liquor traffic? We dare not pass over the oft repeated text, Hab. 2:15: Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink, that putte&ttky bottle to him, and makest him drunken also. Paul says, Rom. 14:21: It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine nor to do anything whereby thy brother stumblcth. Rom. 14:15: Destroy not with thy meat thy brother for whom Christ died. Cor. 1. 8:13, Wherefore if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesb. With such principles as these we can hardly suppose that Paul would have voted for, or have endorsed, or have treated with indifference, the liquor traffic as we have it. We cannot think of Paul and the other holy apostles voting for the legalized sale of intoxi2ants drinks as used by our people. Some men, no doubt, are perhaps church people, will Liss at the idea of resorting to such argument against the liquor traffic. But some way we feel safe in doing what we are convinced the holy apostles would have done. We have *known ministers of the gospel'to vote against prohibition, but we have never known one to engage in the sale of liquor, and retain his ministerial standing. Why not? If the business is not immoral, why should not a minister in good standing engage in any branch of this profitable business as well as to teach, or to merchandise, or to farm? But the minister is to be an example to the people, and the people are to follow that example. I Tim. 4:12; I Pet. 5:3; I Cor. 11:1. This is for the man who wants to be controlled by the bible.
