Levi Pope, a white man about 35 years of age, was killed Saturday , night while attempting to cross the street car tracks on Assembly street, near Rocky branch. The car, under charge of Motorman Wm. Flitter and Conductor L. H. Poag, struck the man who, according to the testimony, stepped from behind a trolley pole in front of the car. The car slowed down as the man attempted to get off the track, but it was too late. His skull was , fractured and other injuries inflicted. An noon as "Doasible he was taken to the Columbia hospital but died on the way, the skull fracture being the immediate cause of death. The deceased was an employe of the capital gity mills and is snryived by his wife and three children. He came from Lexington county. The body was taken to the undertaking rooms of McCormick & Pletscher and an inquest held by Coroner Walker yesterday morning. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased came to his death by being struck by a street car. Neither the motorman nor conductor was held after the testimony was heard.? v The State, 21. Governor Grants Parole. Columbia, June 19.?Governor Ansel s to-day granted a parole to Bert- Stokes, of Greenville, under circumstances " which are somewhat out of the ordin? nary. )ut The papers in the case show that ras Stokes was convicted seven years ago, in his absence, of violation of the disto pensary law, and given three months Qd in a sealed sentence. Westminster, June 19.?Sam Long, a yuung man about twenty-one years old, living about one and a half mile3 from here, committed suicide late on Tuesday evening by snooting himself with a shotgun. Young Long left home on Thursday, presumably to go hunting. He failed to return at night and searching parties found hi9 body next morning about 500 yards from his home.
