Negro ia Florida Lynched.

here just before the telegraph office
at Arcadia, Fla., was closed, that
a negro was lynched there late thi9
afternoon for an attempted criminal
assault on Mrs. P. R. Read, wife of a
prominent citizen of Arcadia. A posse
was formed as soon as the news of the
attempted crime spread and within an
j hour the negro wa9 captured within a
! short distance from the scene of the
| crime and lynched. This makes the
j second lynching for attempted crimin|
al assault in this section in the last
six weeks.

Engineer and Fireman Eilled.
The derailment of an extra freight
No. 275, at Styx, a few miles south o
Columbia, on the Savannah line o
the Southern Railway, in this county
on Thursday morning about 10 o'clock
caused the death of Engineer W. H
Turner, of Columbia, and Fireman J
Y. Carlisle, a native of Fairfield. Jus

probably never be known, but it ii
thought to have been due to a defec
tive tie or rail. The engine and fiv<
freight cars turned completely ovei
and several other cars left the track
Engineer Turner was fatally injuret
and lived but a short time, and Fire

out until several hours afterwards.
