McGrady, an aged Confederate Veteran died on Tuesday at the Columbia Hospital as a result of a bite from a dog with the rabies. Mr. McGrady was bitten on April 28, and after 4taking the so-called Koon treatment, supposed himself well. Monday night he attempted to kill himself by cutting his throat, and as a result of the wounds inflicted on his neck be was carried to the hospital, where he lingered for a few hours. He died as a result of an attack of the rabies. He was a good Confederate soldier and a member of Camp Bookter, U. C. V. ? ' * Haay Littla Bits. A tax of 20 percent, ad valorem on raw cotton as a ''revenue duty" was proposed by Senator Bacon, who declared that from this source a revenue of |4,000,000 could be obtained. "By offering this amendment," Mr. Bacon said, "I open myself to criticism from those people who can not distinguish between a duty of 100 per cent, and a revenue duty." Mr. Bacon said importations of ordinary cotton now amount to 20,000,000 pounds and the duty that would be -Li.:?J ?t i.: v uuuiiueu wiruiu uc xuur uiiius ae ixi uuu as from all other staple agricultural products combined, sugar excepted. Mr. Bacon agreed to allow his amendment to be considered on Monday. When the proposed duty of 11-2 cents a pound on lemons instead of 1 1-4 cents a pound as proposed by the honse and one cent as under the Dingley bill, was reached Mr. Root was promptly- on his feet with an objection. Quick to defend an interest of his State, Senator Flint gave a very fnll account of the lemon industry of California and made strenuous contention for the increase. Stepped Dead in the Field. News was received here of the sudden death of Mr. Jesse Kay, a prominent farmer of the Honea Path section, which occurred at his home near there. He was working in the field near his home, when suddenly he dropped to the ground, expiring with, in a few moments. Mr. Kay was one of the most prosperous farmers of the Honea Path section and was regarded as one of its best citizens. He was honest, straightforward and square in all of hie dealings, and his death comes as a shock to the community. Mr. Kay was 52 years old and is survived by wife and several children. He served with* distinction throughout the war between the States, being a fgal$ lant. and true soldier.?Anderson Mail.
