j Washington, May 31.? Congressman
| A. F. Lever's desk in his office is litj
orally filled with cans of beans, beets,
I r-tr.. world without end. I
J 5
JTnis comes of the fact that he is a
member of the committee of agriculture
and is the chief champion of a
strict enforcement of the Pure Food
and Drugs Law and of the idea that
preserving powders and :he like are
| unnecessary 3n the canning business,
j The department of agriculture has
; jut?: issued a bulletin giving a very
simple method by which all fruits and
vegetables may bo canned in the farm
borne and kept, through winter and
this is to be done without the use of
preservatives. The cans and jars on
Mr. Lever's desk represent the efforts
of the department of agriculture to
convince him that its method is not
only simpL' but effective. He is thoroughly
convinced. The process for
preserving is the work of Frank Breuzeale,
ar. Anderson boy and a gradu- I
ate of Ci cm so n College, who has been
I
in the department of agriculture for I
several years and who has made good
Breazt ale is a confirmed dyspeptic j
as i< an and candaverous in appearance
as the 'Congressman whom he is
interesting in his work. lie is a vegetarian
as much so as Senator La
Foltetie who is also greatly interested
in bis process. It is because of the
tact uiai. ne is a vum-'ianaii liiuu ne
has fallen upon this plan of preserving
fruits and vegetables.
Tat' only mink in it is a glass jar
and an ordinary tin can or clothes
boiler. Corn, English peas, string
beans, oara, in fact all vegetables
may be kepi with their original color
and flavor. The method consists in
a ruing the fruit or vegetables in a
closed vessel for one hour eacji on
l..reo successive days, this completely
sterilizing i:, killing all germs and
other things. The cause-of decomposition
is a germ or bacteria and as
soon as these are destroyed, the vegetable
wiil keep indefinitely. The !
adoption of this method not only j
leave > no excuse for the use of pre- I
serving powders, against which Mr.
Lever and Dr. Whey have fought so
hard daring the recent session of Con
j gross ana which are undoubtedly |
harmful in their effects upon infants j
and invalids and are used to cover up j
unsanitary and unclean nut-hods ami
cheap and rotter; materials, but it enI
ables the house-wife to make use of
i eve! y vegetable raised in her garden j
J and of all the fruit from her orchard I
j i
j and the expense is practically nothI
big.
The department has issued a hullo
tin, being simple in its get-up and '
| tlnse may be had by applying to j
j members of Congress. It is Fanner's j
, Bull it in No. dob.
| Mr. Lever has been allotted Jo.OOO j
j of tin se and any one who is interest
j ed in his crusade for pure food, may j

Raleigh, N. C., May 23. A sensa- j
lional killing occurred last Sunday 1
near Bellamy's Mill, in Ilallifax county.
Levy Marriott was the victim,
and Charges Fiannigan is charged
with having fired the shot that caused
his death. Fiannigan, according to
the report received here, had gone to
Marriott's home where part of the}
morninsr was snenf. Flan mean, went
for a drive with Mrs. Marriott and
upon his return was cursed by Marriott.
Fiannigan bore the cursing, but
when Marriott toid him he must leave
the house, drew a revolver and fired,
killing Marriott instantly.
Sometimes you 11103' be told that

That, isn't so. Nothing made is as good
as DeYwtt's Kidney and Bladder Pills
