E 48 Where Chess Is Most Popular. Games may come and games may go, but chess bids fair never to loss its popularity. Nowhere else is it so popular as it is in the village of Strobeck, near Halberstadt, in Prussian Saxony. Some time in the eleventh century Count Gunnelin, held a prisoner in a stone tower in the village, amused himself by carving a set of chessmen and teaching the game to his jailers. The tower, which still stands, is known as the Chess tower. This delight in chess continues to the present in Strobeck. Every person plays. The village hotel is called the Chess Ian, tournaments are held every year, and prizes are given to the best players. If a young man goes to an adjoining village for a wife who cannot play chess he must pay a fine, to be used toward the expenses of the next tournament This subtle ordinance has spread a knowledge of the game among the young ladies of all the surrounding villages. Bruges. What Is the right pronunciation of this word? It is usually pronounced by English people as if it were French, with a soft, sibilant g, and in one syllable. Is there any justification for this? In the first place, why is it not Anglicized, like Waterloo? And if not English, why French? Why not Flemish? In Bruges itself you do not hear the French pronunciation. It is the Flemish?Bru-ya. Ask at the station if this is Bruges (a la Franeaise), and they will hardly understand you. They will say, "It is Bru-ya." In Longfellow's "Carillon," and also in "The Belfry of Bruges," the word has two syl lables. Is this intended to be read with the Flemish pronunciation (Bruya) or in the English fashion (to rhyme, say, with "subterfuges")? It cannot be the French. It may be said that an American poet is no rule for English people, but the word also occurs. Two robbers boarded Southern passenger train No. 17, at Warrenville, S. C., ten miles from Augusta, on Tuesday night, got the drop on Express Messenger Thomas L. Hutto, 1 1- -1 1- 1 !iL ? Burrell, agent of the Southern Express company at Augusta, states that the robbers secured about $200. This is the first time oit record that the express has been of ou\jii suian auiuuiii. The robbers rode into Augusta and left the train at Broad street in the centre of the city. No one on the train knew of the incident and the robbery was not discovered until the messenger was liberated at the union station, negro porters who were to engage in unloading the express having located the imprisoned man by his vigorous kicking within the box. South Carolina As A Cotton Manufacturing State. According to late statistics there are 162 textile manufacturing corporations in South Carolina, with a capitalization of $59,992,050, operating 3,419,523 spindles and 92,744 looms. About 60,000 operatives are employed in producing 77 million dollars worth of finished fabrics for 800,000 bales of cotton. North Carolina ba9 352 mills, including those devoted to cotton, woolen, silk and knitting, but their total capit.altzatfnn i? Iphs than that of the South Carolina mills and they operate only 3,103,079 spindles and 55,000 looms. Of the cotton manufacturing states Massachusetts leads with about 9 1-2 million spindles. Lightnifcg Sills Two Negroes. Johnston, May 20.?Alex and Jack Brown, two negro boys, were instantly killed by lightning this n^orning about 9.30 o'clock on the plantation of Mr. Wm Toney, near Johnston. There were five in the one-room dwelling and all received a shock. A fallir g brick from the chimney, on either side of which the two boys killed were sitting, struck a younger brother in the eye, inflicting a bad wound. One end of the house was entirely shattered.
