Over almost the entire cotton belt the weather condition have been unfavorable to preparation and planting of the cotton crop. In some sections dry weather has prevented planting. Ia others excessive rain9 have prevented the necessary plowing. If the usual cotton crop is planted it will be only at the expense of inadequate preparation, and the yield will not pay for the expense of growing it. There has never been a more auspicious time for beginning the practice of making corn and hay. If the farmers of the cotton belt will only plant the better part of their lands they have intended planting in cotton, they will have time to give the soil a better preparation. Newberry College, May 13.-?The College community was delightfully surprised yesterday when President Harms announced the receipt of a check for $10,000 from Dr. D. K. Pearson, the generous benefactor of Newberry. This is an unconditional donation, and will be used as i9 deemed best by the president and the board of trustees. It will be remembered that two years ago Dr. Pearson gave the College $25,000 towards her endowment on condition that $10,000 be raised by the College authorities, which condition was met in a comparatively short time through the efforts of Ex-President Scherer.
