Ed. Bynum Shuts Sheriff With
Shotgun?Will be Lynched
if Caught.
! Sheriff P. H. Corley is lying at his
home desperately wounded and a
posse of three hundred men is scouring
the country for Ed Bynum, a des'
perate negro, and if he is caught a
lynching will sorely follow.
It> seems that Bynum had some
trouble with Mr. C. W. Caughman,
about a field he was working, and the
negro went into the field early this
morning and run a number of negroes
out of the field with his gun, Mr.
Canghman issued a warrant for his
arrest, and Sheriff Corley went to
Bynum's house. When he came up
to the house the negro shot him
through a window with a shotgun,
ffco sheriff firwl with his rifle, but not
until after he was shot. The news
spread like wild fire and it was not
long before the whole country was
aroused. Bynum made his escape and
up to 9 o'clock has not been captured.
He is a notorious character and ha9
been in trouble before.
Sheriff Corley is shot in the right
side of the face, and in the breast.
His right hand is riddled with shot.
Dr. Wingard is in attendance, but the
extent of the injuries cannot be ; ascertained.
Henry Corley is one of the bravest
officers in the State, and his thousands
of friends will wish for him a
rapid recovery.

is so large this year that it has been
necessary to divide the work of the

evening previous to commencement
week.

Wingard, who has been very ill for
the past two weeks, is very much the
same. A trained nurse from Columbia
is at his bedside.

Commencement Ezercises.
The commencement exercises of
the Palmetto Collegiate Institute will
be held May 23rd to 25th. The sermon
will be preached by Rev. J. P.
Inabinet on Sunday at 11 a. m.
On Monday forenoon there-will be
an exercise rendered principally by
' the smaller children. There wiil?. be
exercises on Monday evening, Tuesday
forenoon and on Tuesday evening.
These exercises will consist of
selections from all of the departments
of the school.
The literary address will be on Tuesday
evening by State Superintendent
of Education John E. Swearingen.
Everybody is invited to be present
! at all of these exercises.

Emanuel M. Taylor on Jan. 1, 1898. i
To this union four children were born, j
two boys and two girls who, with her ; (
husband, father, mother, two broth- j
ers and five sisters, are left to mourn i 3
