WHITE GIEL
WEDS NEGEO
Another marriage between a whito
and black was consummated in Washington,
D. C-, on Monday last. However,
in this case, unlike the five mixed
marriages which have preceded it
here within the last year, the groom
was black and the woman a pretty and
well-dressed white woman.
A colored man giving his name as
Jeremiah Bond applied to Marriage
License Clerk Belew for a license. He
gave his age as 23 and his residence
as New York city. Clerk Belew was
visibly surprised when the colored
man in giving the race of his prospective
bride, as required by the code,
said that she was white and 29 years
old. Her name was Margaret Kahlin.
Beyond stating that he was employed
in the Marshall hotel, in New
York, the negro declined to furnish
information as to himself or the young
woman. After the license was issued
Bond placed it in his pocket and left
the building. He was met on the outside
by the woman, wTho was fashionably
dressed. She looked younger
than the age given, and had light
brown hair and a clear complexion.
The prospective bride was led by her
dusky bridegroom to the home of
Rev. W. Bishop Johnson, a colored
clergyman, where the ceremony was
performed.

Arrives At Clezxison.
Clemson College, May 5.?Captain
Marcus B. Stakes, the new commandant,
has arrived at Clemson College,
and will at once take up the duties of
commandant and professor of military
science and tactics. Capt. Stokes |

Acting Commandant Bramlett will
still act in the capacity of commandant
until Capt. Stokes becomes familiar
with the workings of the office.

An Assault Case in Pic&ens.
Greenville, May 8.?Haskell Butler,
a negro charged with criminal assault
on a white married woman in Pickens
county, has been placed in jail here
for safekeeping, lie was brought here
under guard and in secrecy. A lynching
was feared in Pickens, it is said.

Eesperate Prisoner Shot.
Albany, Ga., May o.?Ely Holmes a
desperate negro prisoner in the Lee
county jail at Leesburg, was shot to
death this afternoon in a hand-to-hand
fight with Deputy Sheriff H. D. Logan
in a dark cell in the jail, a fight in
which the loser could not leave the cell
alive. Both men realized this according
to Deputy Logan, and when his
chance came lie killed the negro. He
had entered Holmes' cell and the negro
attacked the deputy with a stool, beating
the officer unmercifully before the
latter could draw his pistol. Then a
fight began for its possession which
ended when the deputy fired and the
negro fell to the floor dead.
