Moon To Bide Her Face.
Astronomers are greatly interested
in the coming total eclipse of the
moon, which occurs on the evening of
Thursday, June 3. The phenomenon
may be observed all over the conti
nent, if the sky is clear.
In this section the rise of the moon
will be almost normal and the people
may watch the shadow of the earth
gradually steal over the lunar body.
But further in the continent, probably
on the other side of the Mississippi,
the inhabitents will first see an odd
looking disc of a faint reddish color
rise from the east.
When the moon rises here only a
narrow portion of the shadow will be
observed. Gradually it will enter
deeper and deeper into the earth's
shadow until the moon gives no light
and is only barely perceptible.
The moon, however, will be in the
earth's shadow for over an hour, and
practically the only light from the
heavens will be that of the stars.
An eclipse of the sun will be witnessed
a fortnight later, on Thursday,
June 17, shortly before sunset. The
only effect that it will have is to send
the chickens to roost an hour or two
earlier.

The Rev.i. L. Harley, Superintendent |
cf the Anti-Saloon League, Makes I
Public a Letter.
To the Editor of The Dispatch:
As some of the liquor houses, are j
sending out a letter to express agents j
which is nothing less than a bribe, we j
think it is advisable that the follow- j
ing sections of the Knox Bill, recent- !
ly passed by Congress, be published.
This part of the bill applies especially
to express agents and railroad companies:
Section 23S. Any of-ieer, agent em
plo}*ee of any railroad company, ex- j
I press compaiu\ or oth?r common car- )
rier, who shall knowingly deliver or
caii9e to be delivered to any person to
whom it has been consigned, unless
upon the written order in each instance
of the bona fide consignee, or
to any fictitious person under a fictitious
name, any spirituous, vinour,
malted, fermented or any other intoxicating
liquor of any kind which has
been shipped from one State, Territory,
or District of the United States,
or place noncontigwous to but subject
to the jurisdiction thereof, or^ from
any States, or place noncontagious
to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof,
shall be fined not more than five
thousand dollars, or imprisoned not
more than two years, or both.
Section 239. Any railroad company,
express company, or other common
carrier, or any other person who,
in connection with the transportation
of any spirituous, vinous, fermented,
or other intoxicating liquor of any
kind, from one State, Territory, or
District of the United States, or place
noncontiguous to but subject to the
jurisdiction thereof into other States,
Territory, or District of the United
States, or place noncontiguous to but
subject to the jurisdiction thereof, or
from any foreign country into any
State, Territory, or District of the
United States, or place noncontiguous
to but subject to the jurisdiction thereof,
shall collect the purchase price or
any part thereof, before, on, or after
delivery, from the consignee, or from
any other person, or shall in any manner
act as the agent of the buyer or
seller of an}r such liquor, for the purpose
of buying or selling or completing
the sale thereof, saving only in
the actual transportation and delivery
of the same, shall be fined not
more than five thousand dollars.
The follow i lg is a sentence from
one of the letters referred to above:
"On the other hand if you yourself
wish to make this money on the side,
we will think still better of it and
want to assure you that any dealings
that we have together and all communications
that pass between us will
be held strict!}' confidential. We
have a number of express agents
throughout the United States who
are making nice money in this way
and some of them are handling this
business under an assumed name,
which, of course, is none of our affairs.
