HE KNEW ABOUT LAWYERS.
And That Was Why He Was Not Interested
In the Case. *
The sudden manner in which the
team that was coming down 'the road
halted was enough to show that the
driver was surprised at something. Pie
took his hat off and waved it at a man
who was working in the field, at the
same time calling at the top of his
voice:
"S-a-a-y, t-h-e r-e!"
"What do you want?" asked the man
who was working as he came cad
leaned over the fence without lotting
go of the lines over his team.
"Didn't >ou hear 'bout it?"
"'Bout what?"
"It's goin' on."
"What's goin' on?"
"Land sakes! There's a man fur ye!
Ye'll be sayin* next yer uncle didn't
die an' leave a will that mentions ye
ter have a hull lot o' money if the other
fellers don't succeed in breakin' it."
"Course I knowed that."
"An* the case come up fur trial this
mornin'."
"I knowed that too."
"Then why wasn't ye up to the
courthouse takin' an' interest inter it
same ez the rest on 'em did?"
"Waal, ye see, this here's a busy
season with me. If I hedu't nothin'
else ter do I wouldn't mind droppin'
in an' hearin' 'em argy back an' forth.

Mr. David K George
Holds Lucrative Position.
We clip the following from the Mill
New?. Mr. George is a son of Mrs.
D. L. George of this place, and his
many friends here will be pleased to
learn that he is now holding a very
lucrative position with the Gainesville
Cotton Mill:
The Gainesville Cotton Mill is running
on full time with plenty of help.
We have a fine set of overseers ar d a
bustling superintendent. Everybody
seems contented. Mr. J. D. Lokey is
our superintendent; R. F. Bagwell,
overseer of spinning, assisted by C. L.
Taylor; W. T. Bone, carder, assisted
by Mike Elliott; G. L. Smith ha9 recently
been promoted from second
hand to overseer of weaving, assisted
by Q. T. Whitmire in room No. 1, J.
H. Lyles is room No. 3; A. P. Jones' is
overseer cf cloth room, assisted by L.
A. White; Mr. D. R. George, has recently
accepted the position as chief
engi leer and master mechanic, with
R. K. Martin second hand in machine
shop, and John Corn engineer. Mr.
George is putting bis engine and machine
shop in fine shape and has reduced
the coal bill about 33 per cent,
which will of course make the stockholders
smile.
The company is installing some new
machinery, 22 now Saco and Pettee
1909 model spinning frames are now
being placed. Also new carding machinery,
and 120 new Draper looms.
The output of this mill is print
cloth, and the average capacity
for February exceeded 61000 yards or
8,356 pounds. There are now 1,100
looms and the 120 looms which are
now being placed will make a total
of 1,220 looms.
We have a good school for the little
folks in the mill village and good
preaching every Sunday; also a good
Sunday school.

Farmers Thinking.
For many years the great mas9 of
Southern farmers have done but little
or no thinking for themselves, so far
as their business relationship with the
world was cbi cerned. It might also
be stated that they have given but little
thought to heir private affairs at
home, beyond a rather listened and indifferant
endeavor to follow certain
crude lines of farming as laid down
by their ancestois. Farmers have
been slow to act on progressive lines,
while the bu?y world around them has
p ished forward in leaps and bounds.
As a matter of course, the world in
general has been thereby far better
equipped to take advantage of the
farmers than the farmers have been
to take care of themselves in the fight
for supremacy in the field of dollars
and cents.
These are not pleasant reflections,
but it is well enough to utter the words
of "truth and soberness,'9 because if
mistakes have been made in the past
we should not allow them so conspicuous
a place in our future work. Indeed,
the mistakes recent years are
being rapidly remedied. This highly
desirable change is being wrought
through the rapidly increasing disposition
of the farmers to read such literature
as will help them in their lifework,
and better than all, they are beginning
to think for themelves.
Broadminded men on the farm are
ceasing to be such a rarity, and the
trend of thought is being concentrated
on the affairs of the outside world as
much as it is on the field. The farmers
are beginning to realaize that no
mattiT how fine a crop there may be
made and harvested, the profit of the
business is not found until the product
is sold for its value in the market.?
