Tho Debt Evil.
That is a very good name for it.
We transpose and adopt it from a contemporaries
heading, "The Devil
Debt." The Ledger began a crusade
against it some time ago, and it is
spreading, not only over Alabama, but
| in other 9tates, the discussion, in fact,
seeming to be general, uur "preacnment"
has been, "Get out of debt."
Debt is the burden of today, and the
disappointment of tomorrow. The man
who continues in debt and still remains
honest wears his life away in
worry ajhd weariness; while the man
whom debt has driven to dishonesty?
are there not many such??has but
made his condition worse. Debt is a
destroyer of energy and ambition. It
is a cancer eating the vital forces of
man's endeavor?a devil fish with tentacles
fastened upon every purpose of
energizing action.
It makes the untended or half tend

farm implement, the comfortless home
and poorly clad children. It is, in
fact, the?devil. The debt devil must
be banished if a people would live as
they should. A Pittsburg, Pa., contemporary
thus adds to the list of
terrors. It says:
Debt is a mortgage on your income.
Debt is a monument to a young
man's weakness; a grown man's failure
in the university of life.
Debt is discounting tomorrow's liberty
for today's good time.
Debt is a quit?claim, to your wife's
confidence, your children's ambitions

Debt is a guaranteed insurance
policy against happiness.
Then what are we going to do?' say
a chorus of young fellows and business
men and aspiring women and
laborers and clerks and managers and
street car conductors and hundreds.

It will take some backbone.
It will take some genuine courage.

up and that's more than you can do
now, and, you know it. You won't

Thaw Must Stay in Asylum.
Harry Thaw, the slayer of Stanford
White, and now confined in Matteawan
insane hospital, cannot be taken
to Pittsburg to testify in bankruptcy
proceedings, according to a decision
of the United States circuit court of
appeals in Philadelphia. Whether
the case will be taken to the United
States supreme court is unknown. In
the meantime Thaw must remain in
the asyium.
