On Saturday afternoon about half past four a shocking accident occurred at the quarry of the Casparis Stone Co., in which foreman John L. Walling was instantly killed and Arthur Johnson, a negro, so badly injured that he died on Sunday afternoon. Elliott Wallace, of Edgefield and Onnie Johnson, of Lexington, two negroes, were seriously injured. Coroner Clarke held an inquest over the body of Walling on Sunday and the jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death by misfortune or accident by an explosion of dynamite at the Casparis Stone Co. Just what caused the explosion will perhaps never be known, but it is supposed that the dynamite was discharged by too heavy tamping. Wol ling was superintending the placing of dynamite in the holes, and when the explosion occurred he was seen to go up in the air for a consi derable distance. He must to have been directly over the hole when the explosion took place. When companions reached him he was dead. The three injured men were soon taken from the hole and given medical attention by Dr. E. P. Derrick, the company's physician. The body of Walling was shipped to Columbia Sunday night. He was 53 years of age, unmarried, and had been here for about a year. He was considered one of the most expert and careful quarrymbn in the country. The explosion was purely an acci dent syad the company is in no way to blame for the terrible accident. Remember that Santa Clans will again make The Bazaar his headquarters.
