What There Is In It.
The saloon keepers all may be very
nice men.
But what is there in it for me?
I blow in my money and wake in the
pen,
So what is there in it for me?
Of course I'm as welcome as flower9
in May,
When I come to the joint to squander
my pay,
But I wake in the cooler the very next
day,
And that's all there's in it for me.
All over this country we're swimming
in booze,
But what is there in it for me?
The saloon-keeper's kids are wearing
new shoes,
But what is there in it for me?
The distiller's share is an automobile,
A carriage the retailer's share of the
deal,
But I'm wearing shoes that are down
at the heel;
And that's all there,s in it for me.
My thirst jost.9 me more than my
cloth^and my food,
And that**all there's in it for me.
The booze*took my money and did me
no good,
And that's all there's in it for me.
The brewer is rich, he has gold by
the peck,
The bar-man gets paid?he's always !
on deck.
But whatever I get I get in the neck? ;

Why, new self-respect and a chance I
for my life. |
New clothes for the kids and a home

A Fledgo to the South.
The South is a land that has known
sorrows; it is a land that has broken
the ashen crust and moistened it with
its tears; a land scarred and "riven by
the plowshare of war and billowed
with the graves of her dead: but a
land of legend, a land of song, a land
of hallowed and heroic memories.
To that land every drop of my blood;
every fiber of my being*, every pulsaI
tion of my heart is consecrated for
ever.
I I was born of her womb; I was
nurtured at her breast, and when my

I may be pillowed upon her bosom

and encircling arms.?Edward AVard

Tickling, tight Coughs, can be surely
and quickly loosened with a prescription
Druggists arc dispensing everywhere
as Dr. Shoop's Cough Remedy.
And it is so very, very different than
common cough medicines. No Opium,
no Chloroform, absolutely nothing harsh
or unsafe. The tender leaves of a harmless,
lung healing mountainous shrub,
gives the curative properties to Dr.
Shoop's Cough Remedy. Those leaves
have the power to calm the most distressing
Cough and to soothe and heal
the most sensitive bronchial membrane.
Mothers should, for safety's sake alone,
always demand Dr. Shoop's. It can
with perfect freedom be given to even

Precocious Strategy
The other night when Johnson was
putting his 4-year-old daughter to bed,
the following dialogue took place:
"Can God hear what I say now?"
from the daughter.
"Yes," replied the father.
This time in a whisper. "Did he
hear then ?" inquired the daughter.
"Yes. He hears you just the same,"
was the reply.
This time apparently lower. "Did he
here me Then ?" asked the child.
"why, yes, of course he does,"
said the father.
"Well, I didn't say anything that
time at all," declared the child, in
triumph.
"Tell General Lee I have fought my
army to a frazzle." was the message
sent by General Gordon to the Confederaie
chieftain just before the sur-.
render at Appomattox.?It's an old,
