Qxlt Virginia Letter.
Dear Dispatch:
After a protracted silence, I drop
you a few lines on this cold, bieak,
wintry night. Yes. it's winter, the
genuine, unadulterated article, Irdly
complying with the requirements c:
the pure food law of June 30, 1903.
Last night I was out at church until
about 9 o'clock, and we ah p.-edicti ti

lire. i ciiii appreciate it too, for* I
was in only one night last v eek, and
this is the only one this week, and I
should have been out now had it not
been roo rough. This would make
fourteen sermons in two weeks, and J
am to teach a Sunday school class
and preach three times to-morrow.
But I was talking about the snow.
We had one Sept. 20 about as deep as
to-dajT. Last week, on Wednesday,
the thermometer registered at 17. ,
Our farmers have had a very good
year. Cabbage, the medium of circulation
in our town, truly meant greenbacks
Twenty-two cars were shipped
from here in one day. Think of that
for a town of 1000 people! Both the
yield and prices were good. It could
be grown without loss for 25 cents per
hundred pounds. This year it averaged
about one dollar per hundred.
Farmers made from ?150 to ?200 an
acre. Some years though they lose,
and then cabbage rots in the fields.
Quantities of potatoes (Irish), rutabagas,
and livestock have been shipped.
The export beef cattle in size
look like young elephants. It is not
unusual that they weigh 1600 pounds
each. Last Monday, I spent some
time about the hospital for the insane

cattle, chickens and hogs. They had
#nly Holstein cows, and some of
then? they told me gave four gallons
at each milking, twice a day. They
had only two kinds of chickens, Plymouth
Rocks and Leghorns. These
layed well only one egg a day; they
now have abdut 3,000 of them. Besides
houses fall for brooding, and
many in a lot for fattening. I saw 48
in a pen that would weigh about 400
pounds each. They had only Berkshires,
and their brooding houses were
fixed up with steam heat.
This i9 hog-killing time here and we
-are enjoying it if the real hogs are
sot.

The next letter from the shall likely
ft? from Leesville, S. 0. As many of
your readers know, we expect to mQVQ
there in December. Nothing hihder
ing we will land there Friday, Dec.
4th. Our stay here has been most
pleasant, and we leave only friends.
The Lord has blessed His work in our
hands. But we know we shall also
like our?shall I say new?home, and
that He has something for us to do
there.
All are well. Mrs. B. is out with
Mends for the night. We are trying
to respond to all invitations before
leaving, and it is more than we can
do. v
Good wishes to all!
