How to Prot3ct Cotton.
| We like the way our brainy and
practical Congressman Lever talks.
L "What he says is always sensible, and

' of cotton, the South's greatest gold
mine, he said at Anderson a few days
ago:
"Row shall we protect this, our natural
asset? By talking about it?
Some. By legislation? Some. By

are all temporary remedies for a fundamental
evil. No doctor suggests a
temporary remedy for a fundamental
disease. There is but one permanent
remedy and that is that you protect
v that cotton and make it entirely your
own by diversification. Grow something
besides cotton. Make cotton
your surplus crop and raise your own
home supplies. Make your farms
self-supporting. Diversification has
been preached so much that it has
come to be regarded as something
theoretical. I want to talk to you of
the practical diversification, the diversification
that goes to the extent j
of every farmer's raising his own
home supplies and this sort of diversification
can be practiced by the
^ poorest farmer. If you would become
independent, you must grow your own
corn, your own oats and wheat and
your own hogs. This is the diversification
that can become practical, and ,
this is the diversification that will enable
us to hold our cotton rather than
have it at the mercy of the merchant."?Orangeburg
