Magistrate Bachman, of New Brookland, held a preliminary here on MonHav in the na.se of Z. W. Wooten, the white man charged with rape, his alleged victim being his little stepdanghter, an embecile, less than fifteen years of age. t. The evidence against Woo ten was very damaging and the magistrate promptly sent the case up to the higher court. The case will be submitted to the grand jury this morning and in case a true bill is found, it is likely that an effort will be made to dispose of the case at this term of court. % X ? Cir t. 9 0?i ' Silled 1)7 Brother. ^ On Saturday night about 8 o'clock Moses Johnson, a young negro boy, was shot by his elder brother, Ed. Johnson. The shooting seems to have been entirely an accident. It is said that Ed was cleaning up an old pistol while Moses was sitting on the i bed nearby. The weapon was dis' -charged, the ball striking Moses in the stomach inflicting a wound from which he died an hour and a half later -despite the efforts of Dr. E. P. Derrick, who was called in immediately after the shooting. Both are sons of the Rev. A. J. Johnson, and the shooting is deplored by both white and;colored. > * * ? Sewing ICaebines. On Sunday morning the Rev. W. H. Hiller preached his farewell sermon as pastor of St. Stephen's Lutheran church, before a large congre^ gation. The Rev. Mr. Hiller ha9 been pastor of St. Stephen's for more than a year, during which time the church has prospered, many new members having been added to the church roll. During his stay in Lexington he has made a host of friends and it is generally regretted that he is to leaye.
