none is of greater importance
than the man who i-> put in charge of

t'ae affairs of the county. It is not always
so regarded by the voters and j
frequently the office is not provided
with a salary sufficient to induce a re- |
ally capable man to accept it, but the
fate of county government hinges
largely on the character and ability
of this officer.
Frequently the fact is brought to
public attention that an enterprise
which is capable of doing well, fails.
It is reorganized, another put in
charge and from the beginning makes
a 9ucce9s. One man on a farm is
gradually accumulating money. His
neighbor by the side of him, with just
as good land, equal opportunities in
every way, makes a failure year after
year. One understands his business,
knows what things are worth, has
judgment, executive ability and common
sense. The other has not.
The county supervisor can be upright,
honest and faithful and yet
spend a lot of money and get very little
to show for it, if he is not careful
and practical. Many demands are
made on him in the course of a year
that have to be turned down. He
must run the risk of offending voters
W 10 ask unreasonable things. Some
will want special favors and others
will want graft. He must know that
every dollar of money paid into the
treasury is a trust fund to be used in
the interest of the people and that he
is the trustee whose judgment is to be
taken. He must make every dollar
count or he will find his county like
many are, almost hopelessly in debt,
and the service no better than in othor

nor the main thing. In this day and
time the people demand progress.
They are not content to drive around

$15,000 Fire at Spartan Mills.
Fire at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning
^destroyed stores and stock of
goods of J. H. Griffin and J. H. Stone
in Spartan mill village, entailing a
loss of $15,000. The origin of the ^re

James Thorn, a farmer, residing
nearRussellville, Ala., while attempting
to ran a mule out of the yard on
Wednesday, picked up a small 9tone
and threw it at the animal. He mis9
ed the mule and hit ^his two-year-old
son, killing him instantly.
Mad Dog Bites Five People.
MacoD, Ga., Oct. 29.?Sheriff Geo.
B. Robertson, of this county, yesterday
carried his wife, three of his boys
and his niece to the Pasteur Institute
at Atlanta for treatment. These
members of his family were bitten
some days ago by a pet dog which exhibited
symptoms of rabies. The
dog's head was sent to the Pasteur
Institute. Several rabbits that were
inoculated with virus from the head
have since gone mad, and much apprehension
is felt for those who were
bitten by the dog. They will remain
at the institute under treatment for
twenty-one days.
