The Quattletaum Estate.
It was the editor's privilege to meet
Col. C. P. Quattlebaum, of Conway,
on the train last week. The Colonel

certain articles of furniture, silverware,

and it was a very sad mission indeed.
All of the children were present and
the personal property was all amicably
divided, each of the children
securing something in which to remember
their sainted mother by and

It is very probable that the real
estate, wnich consists of the old
homestead, at one time, one of the
handsomest country homes in the

was one of the foremost men

Two 2Tsgroes Attack
Deputy, Miller.
On Snndav afternoon about dark
wnen Deputy Sheriff Sim J. Miller
opened the large door entering the
cell to lock one of the prisoners up
for the night he was attacked by two
negroes, Abram Jones and George
Baxter, and for several minutes a
desperate struggle ensued. The negroes
seized Mr. Miller, one from the
side and the other from behind, and
tried to secure the keys. Mr. Miller
drew his pistol, but no sooner had he
done so, than one of the negroes grabbed
it, thus preventing Mr. Miller
from shooting his assailants.
? - -i 3
Mrs. Miller, hearing ner nuBDana
fighting in the room, began to scream
and soon a crowd had gathered about
the jail. With superhuman strength,
Mr. Miller managed to get a lick at
one of the negroes, and he struck with
such force that the negro was knocked
across the room, and he gave up. The
other held on, however, and it was
some moments before the deputy
could extricate himself. Finally the
negro, seeing that Mr. Miller was
getting the be9fe of him, gave up ana
beggea not to be shot. He made a
dash for his cell, and on account of
, the darknes, Mr. Miller was unable to
get a shot. When Mr. Miller entered
the cell he had a lamp in one had, but
the negroes knocked it out of his
hand, and the scuffle was all in the
dark.
There is not a braver man in the
State than Sim J. Miller and the nerve
he displaved on Sunday night no doubt
i saved his life and prevented the escape
of several prisoners.
The men afterwards confessed they
had planned to assault the jailer,
secure the keys and escape. All
praise to Lexington's brave deputy.

Millinery upening a? ja&vi ?.
Last Thursday and Friday the
ladies of the town and surrounding
section visited the big store of W. P.
Roof, to see the new styles in millinery.
It was opening day and Miss
Brown, the charming little milliner,
and her assistants were kept busy
showing and arranging the new
styles. Hundreds of hats went out
from Roof's on opening days, and
many more have gone out since.
This week Mr. Roof has another big
ad. in The Dispatch. This is one of
the most complete department stores
in this section and you can always get
what you want at Roof's. He invites
the people,to make his store headquaaters
while attending the county
fair next week. Mr. Samuel P. Roof
is one of the finest young business
i men in the State, and is always looking
after the interest of his customers.
He will take pleasure in giving you
any assistance possible. The management
of this store is known the
, country over, and there is no establishment
in the State that has a more
extensive trade.
