Alleging cruelty and neglect nf their child, Marchbanks Whiteman, a traveling salesman, Thursday brought action for divorce against his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Whiteman. He also brought a restraining order preventing Mrs. Whiteman from taking their five-months-old child from the court's jurisdiction. Judge Pendleton. of the superior court, signed a temporary order, and set a date for the hearing. According to Mr. Whiteman, Mrs. Whiteman ran the gamut of cooking utensils in her threats against him, and brandished tongs, pokers and stove wood. He says she threatened to commit suicide and was addicted to cigarettes. Mr. Whiteman also alleges that his wife's "unnatural desire" for society led her to her neglect of the child, and he asks for its custody.?Atlanta Journal. A Traveling Man's Experience "I must tell you my experience on an East bound 0. R. & N. R. R. train from Pendleton to Le Grande, Ore," writes Sam A. Garder, a well known, traveling man. "I was in the smoking department with some other traveling men when one of them went out into the coach and came back and said, 'There is a woman sick unto beath hi the car.' I at once got up and went out, found her very ill with cramp colic, her hands and amis were drawn up so you could not straighten them, and with a death like look on her face. Two or three ladies were working with her and giv! ing her whiskey. I went to my suit j case and got my bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Uiarrnoca itemeciy u never travel without it), ran to the water tank, put a double dose of the medicine in the glass, poured some water into iG and stirred it with a pencil; then I had; quite a time to get the ladies to let me give it to her, but I succeeded. I could at once see the effect and I worked with her, rubbing her hands, and in twenty minutes I gave her another dose. By this time we were almost to Le Grande, where I was to leave the train. I gave the bottle to the husband to be used in case another dose should be needed, but by the time the train ran into Le Grande she was all right, arid I received the thanks of every passenger in the car." A Southern physician related a number of funny experiences among the colored folks at the time of a smallpox scare in which a general vaccination crusade had been undertaken. One case was an old colored woman, who said she had no time to stop .work to be sick from vaccination; that the children would starve and freeze if she could not do her laundry work, and that it was positively out, of the question to have a lame arm. "Well, auntie," said the physician, 4'I will vaccinate you on one of your lower limbs, so it won't interfere with your work." "No, siree," said auntie; "I can't spare one of my legs, neither." Then the doctor said, kindly: "Well, what spot could you spare, because you must be yaccinated." The old colored woman thought and thought, and finally said slowly: ' Well, Lord knows, I don't never get no chance to?sit down." A traveling man was in a smoking car when a man rushed in from the car behind evidently in a great agitation and said: "Has any one in this car any whiskey? A woman in the other car has fainted." Instantly a dozen flasks were produced. The man who had asked for it picked out the largest one, drew the cork and put the bottle to his lips. With a long, satisfied sigh, he handed the flask back and remarked: "That did me a lot of good. I needed it, for it always makes me ill to see a woman faint away."?Kansas City Independent.
