popular traveling men in the State
and a resident of Batesburg, was here
on Monday.
Fine rains have fallen all over the
county during the past week. In

Mr. Isaac Edwards, one of the most
successful business men in the State
and a resident of Batesburg, was in
town Monday.
Prof. Henry Barre, of Clemson,
spent Saturday and Sunday with his
parents here. He was accompanied
by his friend, Mr. Walter Beatty, of
Anderson.
Mrs. Lather L. Long, who has been
quite ill for the past few weeks with
fever, is still very sick, and a trained
nurse is daily at her bedside.

Mrs. J. R. Hubbard, accompanied

his family in Pembroke, Va., will return
to Lexington on August 28th.

visiting the Briggs Piano factory. He
is very enthusiastic over this piano
and says he will be better prepared
than ever before to tell the people of
its merits. Mr. Lucas will also visit

Washington.

Delightful Birthday Dinner.
Miss Martha Hendrix Caaghman
celebrated her 19th birthday at the
beautiful country home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. James Caughman, on
Sunday with a birthday dinner. The
house was beautifully decorated with
flowers -and potted plants, which
added fragrance to the occasion. A
delicious dinner was served and the
guests reluctantly departed, all of
them singing the praises of the young
and charming hostess. Those present
were: Misses Annie Lou Taylor,
Helen Corley, Jennie Bickley, Eula

Negro Sills Negro in Saluda
County.
Saluda, August 21.?News reached
here yesterday of a duel with shotguns
between Will Culbreath, Jr., and
Jack Jaya, both negroes, late Wednesday
afternoon on Mr. M. M.
Payne'8 place, near Big Creek, this
county, with the result that Culbreath
is dead and Java probably mortally
wounded.
Culbreath was shot in the heart and
after walking about fifty yards, fell
forward on his face and died instantly.
Java was shot in the left groin, j
the whole load of shot and wadding
penetrating the body. Little hope is
entertained for his recovery.
Both parties fired at each other at
close range and the shots were almost
simultaneous.
Picaie at Amide's Ferry.
The Saluda Farmers' Union will
give a picnic at Amick's ferry on
August 28th. Everybody is invited
ana a large prowd is expected. There
will be no politics at the gathering.
Addresses will be delivered by Congressman
A. Frank Lever, of Lexington,
and Col. J. B. O'neall Holloway,
of Newberry. A pleasant day is be- j
ing looked forward to.
