Stung to Death "by Bees.
Spartanburg, Aug. 22.?Mrs. W. T.
Anaerson was stung to death by bees
at her home at Mountain View, several
mile9 from here. Mr. and Mrs.
Anderson were en route to church,
and had just left their home when the
mule they were driving took fright,
and in trying to check the animal Mr.
Anderson pulled the wrong line and
ran the mule into a bee hive, causing
the bees to swarm out by thousands.

planted 25 acres of oats last season
and had also five acres more of volunteers,
which he left standing, making
thirty acres in all. From this crop he
threshed 1,200 bushels, besides feeding
his stock two months and leaving
a quantity in the bundle. He thinks
he made from the thirty acres fully
1,500 bushels.
Governor Heyward, who is at Bowling
Rock for his health, is improving,

Dislocated His Neck.
Anderson, Aug. 20.?A peculiar accident
happened near here on Sunday
when Mr. William G. Thomas, a fireman
on the Blue Ridge road, dislocated
his neck while in swimming in
Rocky river. Mr. Thomas weighs
about 300 pounds, and he plunged in
the river. His head struck on the
bottom of the river and his neck became
dislocated. The attending physicians
do not give much hope for recovery.
He is a native of Walhalla,
and was" considered the best man
physically in the employ of the Blue
Ridge road. He is married and has
several children. Mr. Thomas is 34
years of age.

Lightning's Queer Pranks.

one-half miles from Lula, was killed
by lightning Tuesday night, at his
home. He and his brother were lying
across a bed when lightning struck
the house. He was instantly killed.
His brother, who was lying by him,
was unhurt.
Lightning struck a tenant house of
R. Smith's, on Church staeet, Monday
afternoon. On the floor several
cnildren were playing. The lightning
tore out the window frame and the
sash, breaking every light in the
window. The sash was thrown over
the children on the floor, but all escaped
unhurt.

Thurmond for Prohibition.
In his argument against the "special
box" resolution before the county
Democrotic executive committee on
Saturday Hon. J. William Thurmond
took a strong and manly stand for
prohibition in our town and county.
Ae stated that he was an ardent advocate
of the dispensary and believes

in closing up the barrooms throughout
the State, but since prohibition
has been tried everyone is compelled (
to admit that conditions have improved
tremendously. Mr. Thurmond
stated that in his judgment not one
twenty-fifth as much whiskey is sold
now as was sold before prohibition
went into effect.
He stated farther that a farmer
who resides some twelve miles above
Edgefield recently told him of the
very marked improvement in the conditions
upon his farm since the legal
sale of liquor was abolished. Whereas
formerly when his tenants came to
Edgefield and purchased a supply of
liquor from, the dispensary he could

The weather conditions la9t week
were generally unfavorable. The extremes
of temperature were 63 degrees
at Liberty on the 11th, ond 100 at
Newberry on the 15th.

A positive cure for tuberculosis has
been discovered by Surgeon Burton L.
Wright, of the United States naval
hospital at Las Animas, according to
a report published by him in the current
number of the United States
naval Medical Bulletin, just out. He
says that as a result of long-continued
experiments in the administration of
mercury he is convinced that it is a
sure specific for the disease, and that
the only question remaining to be
determined is how much time ij required
to effect a cure.
Out of forty caeea treated, he says,
three have been discharged as cured

icovery. Moat of the patients experimented
upon were far advanced in
Ithe disease when the treatment was
begun.

Lower Union Meeting.
The next regular meeting of the
lower division of the Lexington Baptist
association will be held at New
Hope Baptist church 011 Saturday,
August 29th, and will last two days.

arranged and able speakers will discuss
the different questions. A large

the negroes fear further trouble if the
troops are moved away. Many of
them are fleeing from the town.
