THE BLUE RIBBON.
Sheriff Corley, of Lexington, Wins
the Prize.
Country newspaper editors are usually
considered "big folks" in their
respective communities and this season
of the year especially they are the
recipients of many generous gifts in
the way of farm produce from their
subscribers. Brother Smith of Green
Pond brings in "the finest melon of
the season." Sister Harris sends in a

potatoes comes from Mr. Bill John
Johnson; a ham from a good old subscriber
across the creek; a bushel of
apples from "Squire Wilkins," a gallon
of cider from "our old friend,"
Joshua Jenkins; a hamper basket
filled with "mush" melons from "Dear
Sister Robinson of Old Town," etc.,
etc. The editor is not unmindful of
these many favors and his paper never
fails to carry short local acknowledgment,
telling how thankful "ye
editor" is for each contribution.
A lot of human nature is displayed
each week in the columns of these
weekly newspapers and "city fellers,"
trudging away on their daily grind for
the morning edition, often envy these
fellows who are the real lords of the
editorial sanctum?who get their
hands in the ink on press days and
feed their stomachs on the best of the
land every day and Sunday, too.
Butr-the city fellows who help to

for a share of the good thing9 occasionally.
Now and then there is a
man who remembers the hard-working
reporters and the men who grind
out copy at their desks night after
night. P. H. Corley, the sheriff of
Lexington county, is one of the men
who has a thought now and then of
the city newspaper folks. Last week
he dropped into The State office and
left the very finest watermelon seen
here this season. It wa9 "a beaut,"
a9 the urchins say and the reporters
did not lose a great deal of time in
"getting next" to its heart. It was a
large melon?some of the boys say it
weighed an even 100 pounds?but
then it probably did not weigh quite
that much. Everybody got a slice
from the city editor down, and there
was some left over for the porter, who
remarked some minutes after he devoured
his portion, "I 9ho' does wants
to be hvar when dat gemman fotches
'nuther watermillyn lak dat."

Proof is inexhaustible that
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable
Compound carries women safely
through the Change of Life.
Read the letter Mrs. E. Hanson,
304 E. Long St., Columbus, Ohio,
writes to Mrs. Pinkham:
"I was passing through the Change
of Life, and suffered from nervousness,
headaches, and other annoying
symptoms. My doctor told me that
Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
was good for me, and since taking
it I feel so much better, and I can
again do my own work. I never forget
to tell my friends what Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound did for me
during this trying period."
FACTS FOR SICK WOMEN.
For thirty years Lydia E. Pinkham's
Vegetable Compound, made
from roots and herbs, has been the
standard remedy for female ills,
and has positively cured thousands 01
women who have been troubled with
displacements, inflammation, ulceration,
fibroid tumors, irregularities,
periodic pains, backache, that bearing-down
feeling, flatulency, indigestion,
dizziness or nervous prostration.
Why don't you try it ? ?
Mrs. Pinkham invites all sick
women to write her for advice.

Why James Lee Got Well.
Everybody in Zanesville, 0., knows
Mrs. Mary Lee, of rural route 8. She
writes: "My husband, James Lee, firmly
believes he^owes his life to the use of
Dr. King's New Discovery. His lungs
were so severely affected that consumption
seemed inevitable, when a friend
recommended New Discovery. We
tried it, and its use has restored him to
perfect health." Dr. King's New Discovery
is the King of throat and lung
remedies. For coughs and colds it has
no equal. The first dose gives relief.

Black Brute Who Attacked
Woman Zs Lynched.
In a desperate fight with a negro
named Leander A. Shaw, in her home
near Pe-nsacola, Fla., on Wednesday,
Mis. Lillian Davis sustained a gash
across the throat, was otherwise
beaten and her baby hurt in her
struggles to resist the attempts of
Shaw to assault her.
When asco9ted by Shaw Mrs. Davis
secured a revolver and ordered him
to leave the house. He grasped the
weapon and taking out his knife,
drew the blade across her throat, and
in escaping from the house struck the
baby.
Two hours later a deputy sheriff
: captured Shaw after a hard fight, and
I Mrs. Davis, although in a critical conj
dition, identified Shaw and he was
; lodged in jail.
; That night a mob of 1,000 persons
surrounded the jail and demanded
the prisoner. The sheriff and several
deputies were on guard and refused
to admit the mob whereupon they
attempted to force an entrance when
the guards fired 011 the mob killing
two and wounding several others.
The mob returned the fire wounding
two deputies. They then made a
successful attack on the jail, secured
the negro and swung him up to an
electric pole in the most prominent
part of the city. As the negro's body j
swung in the air 2,000 shots were fired
at it.

up especially recommended for children,
it is, of course, just as good for adults.

action of the bowels. Sold by Kaufmann
