President.
The Candidates Are Off.
Gaston, Aug. 4.?Special: About
. 300 voters, and two-thirds as many
ladies were present at the formal
opening of the county campaign here
today. County Chairman D. F. Eflrd
was present, and after a few well chosen
preliminary remarks, read the
official li9t of candidates. So far as
we can ascertain, all of the county
candidates were present?only a few .
or the magistrates who have no dominion
here, being absent.
The speakers of the day were devoid
of any enthusiasm. Everything was
harmonious; and a good bit of. Wit
and humor prevailed. The legislative
aspirants hardly got started today;
and we are looking for more later.
A fuller report or todays meeting, together
with a gist of the platforms,
will appear in the next issue of The
Dispatch.
Late this afternoon Congressman
Lever addressed the crowd, and was
given an ovation. It goes without
saying that Mr. Lever is very popular
all over his district; and deservedly
so. At this time, when he has no opposition.
he is going over his district
making four or five speeches a week
* ?trying to get at the needs and wants
of the people. That is the practical
way to do things; and that is the kind
of practical man we are going to hold
on to. C. L. S.
[Note? It's mighty hot in this part
of the world, but the editor and reporter
are still living.?Editor. ]
