C. j | The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, July 22,1908. Shoots His Rival and Sweetheart and Sills Self. New York, July 23.?Angry because his proposal of marriage to a girl 14 I years his junior had been refused, I Julian C. Hannan, a court stenograj pher, shot Augusta Wald, a pretty | girl of 16, and Ralph Nanz, a young man who was calling on the young woman. Then Hannan turned the pistol on himself and committed sui- | cide. The triple tragedy was enacted on the broad piazza of the Fort Lowry Hotel, in Bath Beach. Scores of fashionably dressed men and women witnessed the shooting. A dance was in progress in the ball room and the shots spread fright among the dancers. Hannan had proposed marriage during the afternoon and the girl had told him that though she thought him a "good fellow," she was too young to think of wedlock. After his departure she told her parents. She had promised Nanz to accompany him to the dance at the hotel, where her father was leader of the orchestra. She expressed the fear that Hannan would present himself there to renew his suit. Dressed in her prettiest frock, she reached the Fort Lowry Hotel some time after the dance started. During an intermission she sought the piazza and sat talking with Nanz, her father, mother and sister, Rafina, and several friends. Suddenly Hannan swung up the broad steps with rapid strides. His hands were in his pockets. He was smiling as he approached the group. He walked straight to Miss Wald's chair. When she met his eyes what she saw frightened her and she screamed. "I want to talk to you," he said. At the same moment he drew a pistol and fired at close range. The bullet "entered her right arm and she toppled forward from her chair. His eyes blazing in fury, the rejected suitor then turned to Nanz and fired again. The bnllet pierced the young man's left arm. Hannan at once stepped back, placed the pistol to his own Vioorl and nnlloH t.hp t.ricrcrP7v Thp "VMUi ~ ?"6bv" shot grazed his scalp, and Hannan then shot himself in the heart. He died without a word. Quick Belief for Asthma Sufferers. Foley's Honey and Tar affords immediate relief to asthma sufferers in the worst stages and if taken in time will effect a cure.
