Mr. Webster W. Amick ha9 returned from a pleasant visit to Newberry. July 11. Birdie. ^ Obituary. Bartow, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. I Taylor, was born Jan. 17, 1893, and died June 11th, 1908, aged 15 years, 4 months and 20 days. The funeral servippfl were conducted bv Rev. R. E. Livingston, at Beaulah church the following day and his body laid to rest in the church cemetery in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing rel atives and friends. A Friend. Eilled by Lightning While Under a Tree. Laurens, July 9.?During the severe electric storm in this section yester day afternoon Mr. E. McLees Cunningham * a well-to-do farmer, was struck and killed by lightning in a field, about a mile and a half from his home, in the Rocky Springs neighborhood, about five miles from here. Mr. Cunningham was in the field with his hands when the storm arose, and the presumption is that he took refuge u^der a big poplar tree, under which his body was found, which had been struck by the lightning. The field hands who were at work with Mr. Cunningham all went to the house, supposing that Mr. Cunningham had preceded them. However, when he did not make hie appearance it caused uneasiness and a search was begun. The body was not found until 9:30 o'clock last night, when the party came upon it beneath a large tree. Life was extinct. A Brutal Father. In the circuit court at Independence, Va., recently the jury in the case of Lewis Wingate, charged with the murder of his ten-year-old son, returned a verdict of murder in the second degree and fixed his punishment at 18 years in the penitentiary. Wingate collapsed when the verict was read. The boy's body was exhumed shortly after death and there were evidences of cruel treatment and starvation. It was charged that the father pulled the boy's teeth with blacksmith's tongs to keep him from eating. "Tie Bar." The saloon is sometimes called a bar* That's true. Carroll, of Charleston, has been ruled for contempt for failure to observe the injunction against the illegal sale of liquor. The Columbia police have been after a negro who entered a house and knocked down a white lady. Capt.
