The Lexington County Teachers'
institute will open in the school buildon
the 10th of August. These
"*e?
institutes in the past hays proven of
great benefit not only to those who
attend, bnt to the entire school system
of the county. The teachers
learn to do their work more thoroughly
and this better equips them for
their duties in the school room. The
social feature of these institutes is not
to be overlooked. The visiting teachers
mingle with the social set of our
town and new acquaintances are
formed, strong ties of friendship are
made that will bear fruit in after
years. Let all Lexington rejoice that |
the institute will be. held here, and
let everybody open their hearts and
homes to the educators of our county.

be the means of creating a deeper interest
in the public highways of our
county. It is a deplorable fact that
the government finds it necessary to
take the matter in hand. It is a
shame and a disgrace to the grand
old county of Lexington, that her
people take so little interest in the
roads over which the rural mail carriers
have to travel. Let everybody
get together and work for the betterment
of our roads, so that the postoffice
department will not find it
necessary to discontinue any of the
routes in this county on account of
the bad condition of the roads.

Fairyland, one of Columbia's most
popular theatres, is adding new attractions
every week. The performances
each night are well attended
i and this little playhouse continues to
grow in popular favor with Columbians.
There is always something to
amuse?to relieve the mind and refresh
the body after a hard day's
work. The manager of Fairyland is
always seeking the best that's to be
had, and that he is succeeding well, is
not doubted by those who attend his
popular shows from week to week.
The price of admission is small?
within the reach of all. Go to the
I
Fairyland once and you'll go again.

Tilt Lyric. >
It is indeed a pleasure to attend the
Lyric theatre in Columbia. This is
the only open air theatre in the city
and here.the evenings are pleasantly
spent. The attractions are of a high
order and only the best talent is used.
The Lyric will seat about 700 and it is
always crowded. New programs are
put on every day or two, and there is
never a play that fails to catch the
crowd. Go to the Lyric and you will
be pleased with what you see and
hear.

County: |
Owing to the numerous and flatter- j
ing solicitations that have come to me <
from so many various sections of the <
county, and also to the fact that my j
friends have announced my name as ]
a candidate for the State Senate, I <
have decided to enter the race and J
will be before you and will ask your ]
favorable consideration at the polls i
at the coming primary election. J
I am in favor of as low assessment, i
or levy of taxes, as is possible to run J
an economic government; an increase ,
in the amount of the funds expended <
on the free schools of the state and a J
curtailment in the amount of expen- <
ditures in the higher institutions of <
learning, which, I deem, are extrav- J
agant, as compared with the amount <
expended per capita, on the pupils in <
the common-free scnoois, anu eacu
child is justly entitled to its prorata <
share. <
I am in favor of better roads, which ]
should receive, in some way, govern- <
mental aid. The abolishment of the i
immigration bureau, the insurance J
commissioner's office and other need- ,
less expenditures which are hardens <
to the taxpayers, and call for higher ' ]
appropriations. <
I think that every man, no matter i
what hi8 occupation or station in life, j
is entitled to just consideration and ,
should have equal rights and special <
privileges to none. j
It shall be my purpose to make an (
upright, decent, courteous and hon- <
orable campaign. I shall indulge in J
no personalities, neither shall I pay (
any attention, or notice any thrusts, <
or insinuations cast at me, as I invite
an investigation, at all times, as to
my character and standing, and deem <
such indulgencies as unstatesmanlike j
and beneath the notice of the sover- (
eign voters of my county. It shall be <
my purpose to discuss the issues as j
presented and to give my views upon <
any subjects at the campaign meet- (
ings. J
I have a deep and earnest interest in
the agricultural affairs of my coun- ]
ty and state, and will always cast) my {
vote in the interest of the common <
wage earner and farmers and needy j
taxpayers of the state, which, in my <
judgment, stand in the'greatest need <
of legal and governmental protec- j
tions, and if you see fit to nominate <
me at the coming primary election, it <
shall be my earnest endeavor, when J
elected, to serve you with heartfelt :
gratitude and ability, and to be a
tribune for your interest and a champion
and defender of each constituent's
personal right, an inspiration to serve
you well.
Yours obediently, (

Farmers Disappointed.
There was great disappointment
among the hundred farmers that
gathered here yesterday, when President
B. Harris, of the State Farmers*
Union, failed to appear. It was a <
representative gathering of men, who *
have the best interest of their brother ?
farmers at heart. 2
President Harris did not send any t
excuse for being absent and the rea- *
son for his not coming is unknown. 1
Congressman Lever, who was present *
by special invitation, made a most 1
excellent talk along practical lines, 5
and he was liberally applauded. He ?
never let9 an opportunity pass to <
work in the interest of the farmers
both in and out of congress, and his
work is greatly appreciated.
Fine Cora.
Mr. Thos. P. Meetze certainly has
some fine corn?the finest we have ,
seen so far anywhere. He has four ,
acres of upland corn that it is thought ,
will make a yield of about 50 bushels
per acre. This corn is in about four
foot rows and about 20 inches in the
drill. It will average in height around
8 feet. He has more corn nearly as
good.
Picnic.
There will be a basket picnic at G.
A. Kaminer's spring on July 30th.
The public is cordially invited to attend.
Everybody requested to bring
well filled baskets.
