his time to the upbuilding of the state. I

His interesting personality had
made for him warm friends all over
the nation. A favorite saying with
him wa9 that no soldier of the Lost

said just a few hours before his death,
"is a trust that 9hould be sacred to
the sons of veterans."

New Railroad Law3 Go Into
i Effect July 1st.
After July 1st next, all passenger j
coaches used within the State will be
provided with cinder deflectors, like
those used on Pullmans. An act requiring
the companies so to equip
their cars by the date named was
passed by the recent legislature.
The penalty for non-compliance is !
a fine of not less than $500 and not i
more than $1,000 for each car not 1
furnished with the deflectors.
? The railroad commission has furnished
the railroad companies, for their
information and guidance, with copies
of the act.
The commission also wrote to the
railroad companies recently directing
their attention to another act
1 passed by the recent legislature, forbidding
public drinking on trains. It
is requested that a sign be displayed
in each coach.

Dunlap shot and killed Robert Craig
as the result of jealously over a young

love. Dunlap and Craig had been
' good friends until a short time ago,
when their love affairs came between

distance from town, a quarrel about
the girl ensued, and Dunlap shot his

not been caught.

the present floods are the most de'
structive in the history of Texas. The
railroads estimate that their damage
will be between ten and twelve mil;
lion dollars. The estimated amount
of track washed away is 420 miles.
Thirty bridges have been destroyed
and 43 damaged. Orders for two million
new ties and five million feet of
bridge timber and 480 tons of bridge
| material have been placed.
Fifteen locomotives were wrecked
and 39 damaged, while 300 freight
_ cars were damaged. Freight depots,
: round houses and car shops suffered
damage aggregating over two million
? dollars.
